Herbert Jefferson Welshimer, PhD (3 February 1920 – 12 February 2002) was an American bacteriologist, clinical microbiologist and research educator in the Department of Bacteriology and Parasitology at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia from 1949 until his retirement in 1985 (present-day Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine). He was a noted authority on the physiology and phylogeny of Listeria species, specifically the food borne pathogen L. monocytogenes and various species of veterinary interest. In 1983 he was recognized by Rocourt and Grimont with the classification of species nova Listeria welshimeri (1).
