List of largest Lego sets edit
Size when it comes to Lego sets is hard to calculate, but the number of pieces is the easiest way. But it is not always perfect since there are large differences between the size of the pieces. The first lego set was made in 1949 and ever since then, the number of sets and the size of sets has been growing. The first set with over 100 pieces was released in 1957 and the first set with over 1000 pieces was released in 1963 and now by 2019, there are 347 sets with over 1000 pieces. The size of pieces has both grown and shrunk so although some sets like Ninjago city (2017) have over 4000 pieces it is physically smaller than the imperial star destroyer (2002) which had close to 2000 pieces. There is also a clear difference between the different themes, Star Wars sets in general have larger pieces compared to Creator Expert witch in general has the largest amounts of small pieces. There is also a clear bias towards larger and more famous themes which is why most sets on the list are from Star Wars, Creator and Technic.

the largest sets timeline edit
Ever since 1957 the LEGO group has kept a clear record of the number of pieces in their sets. Ever since then there have been seven sets with the largest amount of pieces. The set that stands out the most is the Samsonite large educational set which held the record for 42 years. The reason this set is so large is unknown but it wasn't sold verry well which is why we wouldn't see a set close to its size 42 years later.
