The 1990 FIFA Rimet Cup was the 4th edition of FIFA Rimet Cup, a quadrennial world championship for men's national football teams organized by FIFA, for the top teams in FIFA World Cup qualification that do not qualify for the FIFA World Cup. The tournament took place in Mexico prior to the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
The 1986 Rimet Cup was the first tournament to feature 32 teams.
Qualification
editQualification for the FIFA World Cup doubled as qualification to the FIFA Rimet Cup. There were a total of 32 spots available in the tournament. Of these 32 spots, 12 went to UEFA, 6 went to AFC, 6 went to CAF, 5 went to CONCACAF, 2 went to CONMEBOL, and 1 went to OFC. Since Mexico was playing in the FIFA World Cup, they did not participate in the Rimet Cup.
