UI/UX (user interface and experience) design professional. I was one of the original Encarta users. Remember that old thing? Wikipedia is my Encarta now.

I have a particular interest in semantic search. Recently I submitted a concept into a competition to redesign the Wikipedia search (not affiliated with WP). It revolves around creating a pseudo-semantic search for the site utilizing the vast array of metadata that the site has. Currently, it's no secret that WP's search is terrible and that, even though there are some advanced functions, they are almost secret and they don't work well anyway. Accordingly, I have begun the Wikipedia High Resolution Tags Project whose aim is to prepare Wikipedia for such a pseudo-semantic search by improving the metadata. Because the search is so wonky, users have resorted to a hack wherein what should be a combination of tags is conflated into one single category, e.g. "American heavy metal guitarists" instead of "American people", "guitarists", and "heavy metal musicians" (and the wider category "musicians"). The hope of the project is that a wealth of quality metadata will provide incentive to Wikipedia to implement these features.
