Ferrocarril Santa Ana is a 3 ft (914mm) narrow gauge railway from Cusco to Aguas Calientes close to the Machu Picchu historic site. It used to run to Quillabamba, but after a 1998 landslide, the section beyond the hydro-electric plant (Hidroeléctrica) close to Machu Picchu is abandoned.

A spur line leaving the main line at Pachar runs to Urubamba. The section beyond Urubamba running to Huayllabamba is abandoned.

Route description

Operators

Trains on the railway line are operated by PeruRail. Since september 2009 two new train operators (IncaRail and Andean Railways) are admitted on the railway line.

PeruRail

PeruRail trains are divided in four classes:

the Hiram Bingham, a luxury class train running from Poroy to Machupicchu.
Vistadome, a train with dome car equipment running from Poroy to Machupicchu, and from Ollantaytambo to Machupicchu.
Backpacker, a basic train service running from Poroy to Machupicchu, and from Ollantaytambo to Machupicchu.
Local trains accessible only to Peruvian nationals on several routes.
