Super Mash Bros (Formed in 2007 in Los Angeles, California), is a sample based mashup duo consisting of Nicolas Fenmore and Dick Fink. The group formed in 2006 and has self-released three full length albums.

Biography

edit

Fink and Fenmore met in high school, while pursuing separate DJ duos. Dick was one half of Lazerwolf and Fenmore was half of Team Weekend Getaway. After both projects disbanded, the two decided to team up to create music that would sound like “Girl Talk’s hot cousin,” citing the sample-based musician as their largest musical influence. The two worked quickly to release their first album, Fuck Bitches Get Euros in July 18, 2008.[1] To avoid a copyright lawsuit, they released the album for free on Fink’s website Lazerwolf.com.

Immediately following the concert and album release, they began to attract attention from all parts of the globe. When asked about their mashup process, Fenmore explained they tried to use “anything that you can play at a party and at least someone will turn around and go, 'No way!'"[2] The album was extremely appealing to party crowds and spread quickly across the Internet. The duo began to play frequently in Los Angeles and in late 2008 toured numerous East Coast colleges. Fink and Fenmore attend Lewis & Clark College and UCLA, respectively, and it was over a year before their next album, All About the Scrillions, was released. On July 24, 2009 the group released the album for free digital download.

Influences

edit

Super Mash Bros undoubtedly developed their sound from mashup artists like Girl Talk and Car Stereo Wars, but cites artists from all genres as sources of influence. Fenmore cites DJ AM as his favorite DJ, while Fink sites Flosstradamus. The group's image is heavily influenced by the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Super Mash Bros. logo is based off the Laker logo.

Name and Song Titles

edit

The group’s name is based off the popular Nintendo 64 Game Super Smash Bros. Song titles are all inside jokes with the band’s friends.[3] Many of them are also puns on popular song titles (for example, one song is called "I'm On a Float", similar to the Lonely Island title "I'm on a Boat").
