User:Purplebackpack89/Characters in Super Smash Bros.

Over the three incarnations of the Super Smash Brothers series, there have been 40 playable characters, and many more that are non-playable. The game comes with default characters, which are often protagonists of a game or series, and unlockable characters, who or often sidekicks or villians. Usually, the attacks of each character are taken from their series, with A being Melee, B usually being a stronger punch or some sort of projectile, and the other attacks being a variety of things.

Characters in the original Super Smash Bros. edit

Mario edit

Mario is the mascot of the Nintendo franchise and the star of many games in the Mario series, beginning with Mario Bros back in 1983. He is a plumber who is usually charged with saving Princess Peach from monsters that attack her kingdom, and has also starred in a series of sports-related games. Mario is a default character in all three Super Smash Bros. and is essentially the main character of the games.

Jumping is an important aspect of the Mario series, and as such a "Super Jump Punch" is one of Mario's attacks. Mario is also able to slash with a cape, throw fireballs as if powered up by the Fire Flower (his final smash involves setting the stage on fire) and use the FLUDD, a special water gun.

Donkey Kong edit

Donkey Kong is a large ape who has appeared in many Donkey Kong games, as well as an occasional antagonist to Mario in games like Mario vs. Donkey Kong and MarioKart. In these games, he must protect his bananas from the evil King K. Rool. He appears in all three Super Smash Bros as a default character. His attacks take advantage of his massive strength, and his Final Smash involves Konga Drums.

Link edit

Though Link is not the title character in The Legend of Zelda, he is the main playable character. He is the character who is responsible for finding elements of the Triforce, and repeatedly defeats the dark wizard Ganondorf to save Hyrule and its ruler Zelda. Link appears as a default character in all three Super Smash Bros., and is usually fought early in the single-player mode. Link's weapons consist of a magical sword, a bow and arrows, a shield, a boomerang and a bomb. His Final Smash involves trapping an opponent in the Triforce Logo, then slashing at him with a sword.

Samus Aran edit

Samus Aran is the female protagonist of the Metroid series of video games, which involve bounty hunting and fighting piracy in an outer-space environment. She appears as a default character in all three of the Super Smash Bros.

Samus' attacks center around her powerful Power Suit, which makes here heavier and less mobile. She is equipped with an arm cannon that fires charge shots, as well as a grappling beam and bombs. In Brawl, the "Zero Suit Samus" appears as an option. This version can either be chosen at the start, or appear after Samus loses her suit after a powerful attack or her Final Smash. Zero Suit does not pack the punch that regular Samus does, but does have more mobility and agility.

Kirby edit

Kirby is the pink ball protagonist of a series of games aimed at younger kids. Kirby's adventures require him to save Dream Land, a fantasy universe, from the auspices of King Deedee and Meta Knight, and he also appears in many "side games". Kirby appears as a default character in all three Super Smash Bros. As in the series, Kirby's main special attack is swallowing other characters in order to gain their special abilites (for example, if he swallows Mario, he can throw fireballs). Kirby can also use some of the weapons found in his series, such as a hammer and a cutter.

Yoshi edit

Yoshi is a green dinosaur who appears in many of the Mario games and spinoffs as a playable character or beast of burden. He is the protagonist in Yoshi's Island, a game where players must collect eggs and stars. Yoshi is a default character in all three Super Smash Bros. His attack set revolves around low-damage attacks involving eggs, which he lays, throws and turns into.

Fox McCloud edit

Fox McCloud is the protagonist of the Starfox series, a ship-based shooter game. In it, Fox, Falco and the StarFox fleet take on Andross and the StarWolf fleet. Fox appears as a default character in all three Super Smash Bros. games. His character is one of the fastest and most agile, and has such attacks as a blaster gun, a reflector shield, a firepower recovery move, and (for a Final Smash) a Landmaster tank.

Pikachu edit

Pikachu is the poster child of the Pokémon franchise.

Luigi edit

Luigi is Mario's brother and has appeared as a sidekick or 2-player option in most of the Mario games (though in Luigi's Mansion, he appeared as the protagonist). He is an unlockable character in all three Super Smash Bros., usually one of the easiest to unlock.

Luigi's attacks and attributes are very similar to Mario's, with slight variations (For example, Luigi's fireballs are green and he jumps higher than Mario). Luigi's Final Smash is a psychadelic dance.

Jigglypuff edit

Ness edit

Ness is an unlockable character in the orginal and Brawl, but a default character in Melee.

Captain Falcon edit

Captain Falcon is the main protagonist (and in some versions of the canon, protagonists) of

Characters in Melee edit

Young Link edit

As his name suggests, Young Link is a younger representation of Link, from the game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. He appears in Melee as an unlockable character. His moveset is similar to Link's, but swaps weight and power for accuracy of projectiles. Young Link was replaced by Toon Link for Brawl.

Characters in Brawl edit

Toon Link edit

Toon Link replaced Young Link as an unlockable character for Brawl and is a representation of Link in the The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. His moveset is very similar to Link's (even sharing his Final Smash) and almost identical to Young Link's.

Other Characters edit

Many characters have proposed or rumored for the franchise, particularly in the buildup to Brawl. This buildup led to many phony lists of characters on the Internet, with Waluigi and Tails being the most common characters mentioned. Often, these characters have made appearances in the game as Assist Trophies, stickers, bosses in the single-player mode, or characters in the background of certain stages (For example, Waluigi appears with a tennis racket as an assist trophy,
