His eyes edit

Jean-Paul Sartre had a condition called exotropia, as a result of influenza and subsequent corneal leucoma at age four.[1] His almost blind right eye tended to wander outwards in a severe exotropia or misalignment of the gaze.

Difficulties edit

Sartre suffered many difficulties as a result of his exotropia. Besides constant taunting from his peers, it would cause a degree of tiredness and difficulty in concentrating. As a result, he had a destructive tendency to self-medicate with stimulant drugs and alcohol.

Memes edit

Sartre's eyes have become a popular meme among the philosophy community. Some captions include "One eye on the intrinsic meaningless value of life, the other on the woman." [2] or "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
