William Clarke (1800-1838) Author of The Cigar

Dictionary of National Biography.

William Clarke (1800-1838) was the author of ‘The Boys Own Book’, ‘Three Courses and A Dessert’, and various other pieces of light literature., all of which brought him a considerable measure of popularity. As well as bringing out his own periodical, 'The Cigar', he was also for some time, editor of ‘The Monthly Magazine’. Prior to his untimely death, he devoted himself to an elaborate work on natural history, which does not appear to have been published. Possibly the rarest of Clarkes works is ‘The Cigar’. This was published in 1825 in 2 volumes 12mo., and comprises a series of humorous essays with titles as engaging as ‘Milpuff’s Vagaries’, and ‘Rustic Reminiscences’.
