Booster Juice is Canada's largest chain of fresh juice and smoothie bars.[1] The chain specializes in health-conscious smoothies composed of a pure juice, fruit sorbet or vanilla frozen yogurt, frozen fruit, fresh yogurt and ice. It is now a multinational business with 300 stores spread across Canada, USA, India, Netherlands and Mexico.[2] Booster juice was founded in 1999 by Dale Wishewan and Jonathan Amack in suburban Edmonton.[3]

The smoothies offered by Booster Juice come with a choice of "boosters", or nutritional additives such as protein, echinacea, fibre, and other products such as ginseng or rosehip.

Some drinks offered by Booster Juice contain less common food products, including Matcha, Açaí fruit, a Brazilian fruit produced by the Acai Palm, and Wheatgrass.

Mission Statement edit

Booster Juice’s mission is to provide customers with an incredible, healthy alternative to fast food that’s great tasting, convenient and nutritious making it perfectly suited for today’s active lifestyle. The goal is to make the product and stores energetic, fun, natural and addicting. [4]

History edit

Founded in 1999 by two engineers Dale Wisheman and Jon Amack in Sherwood Park, Alberta. After months of planning and research Wisheman filled his garage with blenders and fruit. This garage would later become the first Booster Juice location. In November 2009 the first official Booster Juice location opened at the corner of Broadmoor & Baseline Crossing in Sherwood Park, a suburb of Edmonton. By the end of 2001 Booster Juice had reached 50 stores in Western Canada. By the end of 2003 Booster Juice had reached 100 stores now stretching coast to coast across Canada.

Booster Juice continued its expansion internationally and by the end of 2003 opened their first American location. Booster Juice continues to expand internationally and by 2012 the company has grown to have 249 traditional and 36 non-traditional locations in Canada, 18 in India, 6 in the United States, 5 in Mexico, and 2 in the Netherlands. Further global expansion is planned, despite established competitors Jamba Juice and Smoothie King in the US.[5]

Founders edit

Dale Wishewan, presently the CEO/President of Booster Juice was a co-founder of Booster Juice. Wishewan was born and raised in Waskatenau. He was born in the year 1969. He graduated from the Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Before co-founding Booster Juice in 1999, he worked as a technical sales representative with Edmonton Exchanger, a steel manufacturer, for eight years. He also operated a car security firm with Jon Amack during college. He has always been passionate about sports like Baseball and Curling. [6].

Jon Amack is presently the CEO of Booster Juice in the United States. In 1999, he co-founded AW Holdings Corporation, which did business in Canada as Booster Juice. He worked as CEO for Booster Juice until March 2002 when he started preparing to open franchises in the United States under the Booster Juice Limited Partnership. His franchise was initially based in Lake Oswego, Oregon. [7]

World's Largest Smoothie edit

On July 27, 2006, storeowners, Frank and Simon Voisin led the Kitchener’s Sunrise Mall Booster Juice store break the current record for the World’s Largest Smoothie. After 3.5 hours of blending, 7 blenders, and over 25,000 ounces of smoothie (740 litres) the challenge was accomplished. Selling the World’s Largest Smoothie into 24 oz cups, Booster Juice was able to help raise $1000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.[8]

Nutrition Facts edit

Nutrition facts—— Booster juice ingredients include fat, carbs, protein and fibers. Some juices also have nutritional additives such as protein, sorbet and so on. Some drinks offered by Booster Juice contain less common food products, such as ginseng, rosehip, Matcha, Wheatgrass and Açaí fruit, a Brazilian fruit produced by the Acai Palm. To illustrate the average nutrition content of a Booster Juice product, here is an example of a high protein juice known as the Strawberry Juice. It is made of cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, and vanilla frozen yogurt. Its nutrition facts are as follows:Energy: 391kcal, protein: 24.2g, total lipid(fat): 2.3g, Carbohydrate: 70.8g, sugars: 65.6g, sodium: 144mg, total saturated fats: 0.1g, fiber and fatty acids. 1 Serving contains —— 391 Calories, 21 Calories from Fat, 2.3g Total Fat, 0.1g Saturated Fat, 144mg Sodium, 70.8g Total Carbohydrates, 11.0g Dietary Fiber, 65.6g Sugars, 24.2g Protein.[9]

Materials——Booster juice smoothies are made from 100% natural ingredients, including fruits, sorbets, probiotic yogurt and a choice of health enhancing herbal additives. There are many varieties of booster juice products and depending on their nutritional focus, the materials used are very different. The categories of booster juices can be divided into: high protein juice, power juice, berry juice, tropical juice, spirit juice, life choice juice, high protein super-food, and super-food. In general, the materials include fruits (such as apple, banana, orange, fresh grapefruit, blueberry, kiwi, pomegranate seeds, raspberry, avacado and so on), vegetables (such as baby carrots, raw clementine, sweet red peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, whole carrots, peas, cherry tomatoes, kale etc.) and other miscellaneous products (eggs, nuts, rump roast, butter, milk, olive oil, water, beer, red wine and so on).

Calories——The calorific value of a booster juice depends on the materials used. A normal Booster Juice Panini has 500 calories, which is significantly high and can be unhealthy if consumed regularly. A Vegetarian Panini has about 400 calories, which is slightly healthier but still relatively high on calories. Whether booster juice is healthy or not is controversial and debatable. Though Booster Juice is advertised as healthy, some health experts have reservations about it. The nutrition value changes from product to product so it is not possible to generalize the health value of Booster Juice products. According to Susan Diranian, “the sugar content of Booster Juice drinks is noted to be fairly high. Yet, you may not find the same vitamins, minerals and nutrients in a sugary soda or energy drink as you would in a drink made from fresh fruit. If you are concerned about the amount of sugar or calories, either order a snack size or share your beverage”. All booster juice drinks have a nutrition binder which is available at every outlet. This binder states the nutrition and calorific value of every juice. There are very few juices with a calorific value of under 400 calories. Booster Juice drinks are known to be high in both carbohydrates and proteins making its health value relative to the person drinking it.[10]

Franchising Options edit

Booster Juice utilizes the franchise business model, with the head office owning fewer than 1% as corporate stores at any one time. To franchise Booster Juice a net worth of $500,000 and $100,000 in liquid assets is needed to qualify. The franchise fee is $25,000 with a total expected investment of between $175,165 and $287,210. The royalty fee is a traditional 6% of gross sales with a 10-year renewable term and 2 weeks of training.[11] There are currently 270 Franchise Units in Canada, 6 in the United States and 34 more across the world. Booster Juice has been franchising since its foundation in 1999.[12]

Business Philosophy edit

Booster Juice provides passionate entrepreneurs with the opportunity to be a part of the solution by creating better choices for nutrition and health. Their convenient menu is a true alternative to the typical fast food fare. Booster Juice is dedicated to serve its customers with premium products while emphasizing sustainable and organic food sources.

The Booster Juice concept is truly a unique food service concept that combines great tasting products with unparalleled convenience while promoting a ‘health, freshness, wellness’ message in a fun, vibrant, colourful & magnetic store environment. Each restaurant is designed with a consistent overall look and feel that incorporates unique elements that are designed to complement each individual store location. Muted wood tones and gleaming stainless steel are offset by the attention grabbing colours of the Booster Juice logo. These unique features of Booster Juice are very helpful in increasing brand awareness.

With over 285 locations in North America, a new store opening faster than 1 per week through the end of 2011, Booster Juice offers franchisees a proven operating system in a rapidly growing segment of the quick service marketplace. In Canada, Booster Juice is the industry leader with 3 times as many stores as all of the competitors combined; this also demonstrates strong brand recognition. The Booster Juice model provides multiple revenue streams, including non-traditional satellites, catering and school lunch programs.

The Booster Juice franchise system is strengthened by corporate systems and is a dedicated local support to guide businesses through all stages of development and operation. The 2-week training process at the corporate headquarters in Edmonton, Alberta and their well-defined processes and procedures can be helpful especially for first time operators who have a customer service orientation but need extra help in starting their first business.
