Gangireddy Venkata Konda Reddy is a renowned author and poet in andhra revolutionary literature. He was one of the founding members of "viplava rachayithala sangham" a forum of revolutionary writers and poets popularly known as "virasam". He is famous for his book "Naandi" which is dramatised and staged more than 1000 times in differnt places of Andhra.

Biography

Gangireddy Venkata Konda Reddy alias Gangireddy was born on 23rd march of 1935 in a remote village of Kasipuram in owk mandal of kurnool Dist.His parents Vengala reddy and Veeramma were illiterates. There was no transport facility during those days. Hence there was no primary education available to the villagers. Moreover the villagers are poor peasants struggling only for their livelyhood and were not in a position to think about educating their children. Kondareddy's elder brother Ayyapu Reddy is very much fond of his younger brother and had a strong wish to make him educated.

Education

Ayyapu reddy took konda reddy to a far away village of Yalluru for the primary education leaving him in a distant relative's house. His secondary education took place in koilkuntla town where he was a classmate to B.V.nagi Reddy B.Narasimha reddy and Rama swamy reddy who in later days became his political opponents. He studied his F.A. in Loyola college Vijayawada where he is first attracted to communist politics. He was the room mate of Late Karra Subba Reddy who was an MLA for 3 consecutive terms to koilkuntla constituency. Though he is involved in student politics he was regarded to be one of the wiser students. He went to Madras to study Law but returned back as his interest was to study history. Later he got admission in Osmania college,kurnool to study B.A. Here his life took a serious turn as he is involved in student politics. Many communist leaders like Puchchalapally Sundaraiah,Tharimela Nagireddy,Mandla Subba reddy and Chandra Pulla reddy came in to his contact during political classes of Communist Party of India. He became the student leader in that college and founded dist.branch of AISF. Suravaram Sudhakara Reddy a renowned parliamentarian and national deputy secretary of CPI is said to be one of Konda reddy's deciples.As student leaders both of them fought for many rights of students[1]

Communist politics

After graduation Konda reddy rejected the job opporunity in govt.service and seriously involved in communist politics. He thought Marxism is the only solution for the uneven society of india.He was influenced by the writings of Carl Marx,Angels and M.N.Roy. He is married to Savithramma and blessed with 4 children. As a fulltime communist he worked hardly to develop the party. When CPI devided he was one among the CPIM formants in the state. He is involved in many agitations for the social cause. He worked stenuously for the eradication of untouchability in several parts of kurnool dist. It is because of konda reddy and Ramachandraiah... Bollavaram village became the first ever village to be freed from social evil of untouchability.He fought against the famous 'Kosigi doras' who according to communist literature were exploiting the poor peasants of that area by collecting higher 'kaul sunkam'. In 1970 he agitated for the upliftment of yerukala tribals in which case he was arrested and taken as a detenue. He is imprisoned for 6 months and kept in Visakha central jail along with somany communist leaders.He fought for the rights of prisoners by going hunger strike.Due to his agitation in the jail it is credited that all the prisoners should be given non vegetarian food weekly.He wrote many poems on the pen name of Gangireddy and were published in Srujana and Yeruvaka magazines. It was during this time in jail that he had the opportunity to write the famous book of "Naandi". After he was released he was actively involved in the revolutionary activities of the party. When a nation wide rift in the party caused to form CPI(ML) he supported and joind with the revolutionary faction. In 1971 when 'Virasam' formed at Vinukonda konda reddy was the one of the founding members. Konda Reddy's "Naandi" is credited to be the first book published oficialy by the "virasam". The then president of "Virasam" Srirangam Srinivasarao (sri sri) wrote the foreword to naandi and praised as one of the best in the revolutionary literature. Later the book was dramatised by Gangireddy himself and became second after the famous "maabhoomi" in number of shows organised. One of his song 'o amara kala vethalaara' is still on the toungues of communist cadre.In 1976-77 during emergency he is one of the few communist leaders whom the police could not arrest.During this period as an under ground worker for the party he worked in tribal areas of Guntur and E.G.districts[2]

retirement and death

when the CPI(ML) is once again split with the likes of Tharimela Nagireddy,devulapally on oneside and Charu majundar and Chandra pullareddy on the other side Gangireddy is vexed of communist policies. when party is not accepting the democratic way of politics he ardently argued to fight for the elections to win the peoples mandate. IN 1978 state assembly elections he contested from Koilkuntla assembly constituency and was defeated and almost retired from active politics. Later he concentrated entirely in koilkuntla area fighting for the rights of farmers.He was the secretary of kurnool dist civil rights forum. when Dr. M.V.Ramana Reddy came out of Telugu desam party and founded 'Rayala seema vimochana samithi'in 1985 he was the incharge of kurnool dist. In his caposity as Samithi's leader he fought for the widening of 'pothireddypadu' head regulater which he believed is the only solution for draught proned Rayala seema region. When SRBC is designed he along with Karra subba reddy lead the agitations for the reservoir to be built at 'Owk cheruvu'. But such a leader,author and a poet also had a tragic end of his life. when his village infested with factionism due to mandal politics so many developments took place and in a mis understanding on 24th of february 1988 his opponents hurled bombs on his house in which incident gangireddy injured fatally and died on the way to hospital.His death annivarsary is being mourned every year in koilkuntla by his disciples and almost all daily news papers publish articles in their dist tabloids about his revolutionary life. A library is run on the memory of Gangireddy in the main center of koilkuntla town. A foundation is working on his name involving in social activies in koilkuntla area. a memorial stone is erected on his name in the village of bollavaram [3]
