Porphyrous is the most common Internet pseudonym of David Vesel, an individual living in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. David is involved in many music projects, including his own electropop recordings on the Purple Note Records label, and the Internet radio programs Escape From Noise and Spellbound, a brief program of music for theremin. He is a co-owner of the Internet radio station Cygnus Radio.
Biography
editDavid was born on April 13, 1968 in Milton, Florida. He was raised in Festus, Missouri, and attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, from 1986 to 1991, where he first became involved in radio at Bradley's student-operation station, WRBU. He subsequently moved to DeLand, Florida in 1993, and Portland, Oregon in 1996. He returned to the St. Louis, Missouri, metro area in 2000. He began broadcasting Internet radio with Ampcast in 2001, moved his programs to Indie Radio Live in 2004, and then co-founded Cygnus Radio with Toni-Anne Reagan in 2005.
Nickname background
editThe word porphyrous only appears in Webster's Unabridged Dictionary as a synonym for purple. It is derived from the Greek porphyra (purple) and was formally defined on the March 15 page of Workman's 1993 Word-A-Day Calendar as "Of or pertaining to the color purple."
