On September 28th, 2015 Burger king launched their special Halloween promotion; “The Halloween Whopper” that comes with black hamburger buns.[1]

On September 19th, 2015 fast food chains in Japan offered two Kuro burgers (Black burgers). The original buns and cheese are substituted with dyed black buns, black cheese and black beef patty. Other toppings like lettuce, tomatoes and onions are not dyed black.[2]

The Halloween whopper is hamburger that consist of black sesame seed bun that is made with squid ink and bamboo charcoal. [3] The Halloween whopper consist of its famous flame grilled quarter-ponder (113.4 g) 100% beef patty, lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, pickles, sliced onions and ketchup. [4] Consumers are allowed to add optional ingredients like, bacon, guacamole, mustard, jalapeno pepper and cheese upon request. Other condiments included are Salsa sauce and BBQ sauce for additional 25 cents. [5] For the Halloween promotion, the black whopper is Wrapped in mummy-patterned paper, slathered in steak sauce.[6] Consumers also have the option to add 1-3 beef patties in a smaller proportion called the Whopper Jr, and without the meat called the Veggie whopper. Burger King offers different promotions throughout the year for a limited time.

Burger King’s new Halloween whopper is promoted through social media. The Halloween Whopper hash tags "HalloweenWhopper" and "SuperEclipse.” Burger King consumers can turn their Halloween Whoopers into a meal with a drink and Burger king’s new Pumpkin Spice Oreo Shake, with 120 grams of sugar and 24 grams of fat. Burger King recently launched a “burger merger” with other burger fast food chain’s to create a fusion to opposing burger companies.[8] The Halloween whopper is the latest experiment that Burger King is conducting.

Controversies

The Halloween whopper resulted a side-effect of green bowel movement, which has become a controversial topic on social media. Brand watch data stated that “the burger has collected 29,000 tweets since its debut last week, with 89 percent of them being negative.” Twitter users also started a new trend hash tagging #greenpoop also resulting memes. [9] Brandwatch analyst Kellan Terry stated that “the reason for the negative conversation is the that the black-bunned burger has had on people’s feces" .The dye used towards the hamburger bun’s ( Brilliant Blue FCF) does not absorb in the intestines.

Burger King stated that the bun's color comes from the "smoky black pepper flavor of A.1. Baked into the bun". According to the Washington Post reports, other possible cause of green poop is bile. Bile can appear through the bowel tract, and sometimes from ingesting iron supplements.

Devin Rubink, a marketing specialist for halloweencostumes.com[11] has release three costumes imitating the Halloween whopper and green poop costume. “The team wanted to lend expertise to helping people make a Halloween Whopper and green poop costume. When we saw the headlines, we had a good chuckle, then went to work”[12] said Rubink. The standard poop costume current price is $34.99, the website allows consumers to add accessories like fishnet stockings, green lipstick, green wig and green stockings. The Halloween Whopper costume is for $29.99 with detailed sesame seeds, the website also sells the Burger king costume for $64.99 with the face mask.[2]
