The Thornton family hails from Ireland, and their family line is traced back to William Thornton born in 1040 AD in London, England[[1]].


Daniel's Family On March 27, 1833 in Pickens, Alabama[[2]], a son was born to Thomas Thornton and Elizabeth Roberts. His name was Daniel Robert Thornton. Daniel was the second child of twelve siblings. His older brother John T. Thornton was born in 1831. John and Daniels' younger siblings are as follows: Sarah Ann (1835-1913), James M (1836-1845), Elisha H (b. 1839), Elisabeth (b. 1842), Lucinda (1844-1900), Thomas Lafayette (1846-1880), Columbus Erastus (1849-1881), Napoleon Bonaparte (1851-1929), Sebastian Cabot(1851-1930), Mary Ann (b. 1856), and Augustus Gustavus (b. 1857).

Daniel's Wife In 1854, Daniel met his future wife Mary Anna Garland (1837-1906), daughter of frontier fighter, Capt. Peter Garland (1805-1873) and Lucinda A. Goff (1818-1845). Mary Anna was the fourth child out of six children. Mary Anna's mother passed away in 1845, at the age of twenty-seven. In the same year Peter Garland married Louisa Philips. By her he had three children; Nelson, Vera, and Daniel. Daniel and Mary Anna married in Anderson, TX[[3]] on July 23, 1853. Mary Anna presented her husband with a son, Columbus Erastus (namesake of Daniel's brother), on December 23, 1855. Two years later the new family moved from Tennessee County to Dripping Springs[[4]]. While living in Dripping Springs the Thornton's had consistent issues with the Comanche Indians. Not long after the couple moved to Dripping Springs in Palo Pinto with their son, several Comanche on horses rode up to the cabin and grabbed Columbus, riding off with him. Mary Anna chased after the rider and retrieved her son, only to be knocked to the ground by the horses flank, causing her to miscarry a child.

The Thornton Children Between 1853 and 1877, Daniel and Mary Anna had ten children.

  • Columbus Erastus (1855-1937) called "Tump" by his brother Thomas. Tump became his family's nickname for him.
