Reel (or jQuery Reel) is a open-source software for viewing of 360° scenes on the web. It supports viewing and playback of object movies, panoramas, virtual tours as well as stop-motion animation. Reel is widely accepted cross-browser alternative to similar solutions based on Adobe Flash or Quicktime. In comparison it lacks the motion smoothness achieved by actual image 3D transformations. It however is easy to put together without additional software tools or license fees. Reel is being developed by Petr Vostřel in Czech Republic with the help of the community as a free plug-in of the jQuery framework. First ever version was released in 2009.
Reel (software) edit
In the core of Reel lies the simple mechanics of switching frames in successive order dealing with individual frames as well as with one large sprite or rectilinear panorama image. All and all it relies on just the built-in capabilities of every web browser - HTML, CSS and Javascript - and is therefore perfect in terms of compatibility with wide range of devices.
The public open-source development, code repository and issues solving take place only on Github.
Photography edit
Users often struggle with the harder part of the task - the photography. In a production environment, a lot of time and care should be taken with the product images since they will ultimately determine the quality of the rotation effect. [3]
Services edit
YouSpin is a free public service, which extends the idea further and offers mobile apps for iOS and Android to assists users in creating Reel scenes. It helps users to shoot the entire scene, assemble the images into a Reel 360° scene. It also allows users to publish their scenes to the YouSpin web. It is a third party service based in Norway and developed by Vedran Cindrić in Croatia.
Tools edit
Drupal Formatter is a plug-in module for Drupal enabling users use Reel to output their images as a panorama or a 360° view of a place or object[4]. It is a free third party tool developed by Lee Rowlands in the UK.
Users of Joomla can use the 3D Turntable plug-in currently under development.
Dreamweaver users...
Content management systems TYPO3 and LEPTON have the support for 360° images with Reel already built-in.
