| A póki okręt walczył siedziałem na maszcie, | While battle raged, at mast I stood, be as it may. |
| A gdy tonął - z okrętem poszedłem pod wodę... | And with the ship I drowned when vanquished down she went. |
| Ale kiedyś - o smętnych losach zadumany | But he — that may reflect upon the detriment |
| Mojej biednej ojczyzny - przyzna kto szlachetny, | Of my poor fatherland — will say, if well-intended. |
| Że płaszcz na moim duchu był nie wyżebrany, | That my mind's mantle was no drab for beggars meant. |
| Lecz świetnościami dawnych moich przodków świetny. | But with the splendor of my ancient fathers splendid. |

| Niech przyjaciele moi w nocy się zgromadzą | Oh that my friends at night together gathered be. |
| I biedne serce moje spalą w aloesie, | And this sad heart of mine in leaves of aloe burn! |
| I tej, która mi dała to serce, oddadzą - | And give it then to her who's given it to me. |
| Tak się matkom wypłaca świat, gdy proch odniesie... | Thus mothers are repaid: with ashes in the urn. |
| Niech przyjaciele moi siądą przy pucharze | Oh that my friends around a goblet sit once more. |
| I zapiją mój pogrzeb - oraz własną biedę: | And drink unto my funeral and their poor lot. |
| Jeżeli będę duchem, to się im pokażę, | Be I a ghost, I will appear and join them or — |
| Jeśli Bóg [mię] uwolni od męki - nie przyjdę... | If God may spare me pain and torture — I shall not. |

| A kiedy trzeba, na śmierć idą po kolei, | And one by one, if needed be, go straight to death. |
| Jak kamienie przez Boga rzucone na szaniec!... | As God-hurled stones that densely over ramparts fly. |
| Co do mnie - ja zostawiam maleńką tu drużbę | And as for me, I leave behind a group of friends. |
| Tych, co mogli pokochać serce moje dumne; | Who for my haughty heart much love did have and room. |
| Znać, że srogą spełniłem, twardą bożą służbę | I did God's hardest service, now the duty ends. |
| I zgodziłem się tu mieć - niepłakaną trumnę. | And I agree to have an unlamented tomb. |

| Kto drugi bez świata oklasków się zgodzi | Who else would like to try, without the world’s applause, |
| Iść... taką obojętność, jak ja, mieć dla świata? | Unto the world displaying but indifference, |
| Być sternikiem duchami niepełnej łodzi, | To be a helmsman in a boat of ghosts – as I was – |
| I tak cicho odlecieć, jak duch, gdy odlata? | And then as lightly as a ghost to vanish hence? |
| Jednak zostanie po mnie ta siła fatalna, | But after me remains, howe’er, the fateful force |
| Co mi żywemu na nic... tylko czoło zdobi: | That, of no use in life, adorned my forehead tall; |
| Lecz po śmierci was będzie gniotła niewidzialna, | But it will press you when I die, without remorse, |
| Aż was, zjadacze chleba - w aniołów przerobi. | So that, bread-eaters, you become sheer angels all. |
