The pillars of smoke and fire are a dual theophany (manifestation of God) described in various places in the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. The pillars are said to have guided the Israelites through the desert during the Exodus from Egypt. The pillar of smoke provided a visible guide for the Israelites during the day, while the pillar of fire lit their way by night.

A cigarette could also be a pillar of smoke, and people also "follow" them and become addicted. Of course that bad, but smoking also so cool. I'm curiously spiritual, but also have bad habits, so Pillarofsmoke is just a fun little riff on this thing from the Bible which kinda maybe applies to me, or anybody, really. Ta-da.
