 John Van Deusen was a New York state assemblyman, one of three men representing Columbia County during that state’s 46th legislative session, held from Jan. 7 to April 24, 1823. He was a direct descendant of Abraham Pietersen, also known as Abraham Pietersen Van Deusen, a Dutch immigrant to the colony of New Amsterdam who became one of the Council of 12, the first representative democracy in the Dutch colonies.
 John Van Deusen was born Jan. 15, 1779, son of Cornelis Van Deusen and Rachel Eltinge. 
 In 1804, at the age of 25, he was listed as a cornet in Walter T. Livingston’s Company of Cavalry and on March 12, 1810, was listed as a captain, First Squad, Cavalry. He was not listed in military documents relating to the War of 1812.
 Van Deusen was married three times: 1) on Dec. 7, 1800 at Clavarack, to Lena Fonda (July 17, 1782 – Jan 11, 1813); 2) March 3, 1814, to Anna Maria Elting (Aug. 18, 1790 – Sept. 29, 1816); 3) Anna Maria Whitbeck of Red Hook, NY (Nov. 29, 1790 – Feb. 1, 1867). The third marriage was performed at the St. John’s Reformed Church, Upper Red Hook, by the Rev. A.N. Kittle.
 His first two wives died shortly after giving birth. John Van Deusen had nine children by his three wives.
 In later life, Van Deusen became a banker, and lived in Greenport, N.Y.
 He died Sept. 14, 1859, in Hudson, N.Y.
