In order to solve for the geodesics of the Schwarzschild solution, we use the fact that, for any Killing vector field of the spacetime and any geodesic with tangent vector , the quantity is conserved along the geodesic. These constants of motion will simplify the problem of finding geodesics in the Schwarzschild solution to a one-dimensional motion in an effective potential.
