Rosh Paulo Gonzales (born April 9, 1989) is a Filipino indie recording artist and songwriter. He is the primary songwriter and lead singer of the indie pop band “Sundays of Summer.” He also has performed and recorded as a solo artist under his real name and his side project “thecalcul8n.” He has also collaborated with singer/songwriter and his cousin Paul Kristian on projects such as “Us 2” and “The Silent Lambs.”

His project “The Silent Lambs” even held the number one position in the Indie Folk category in the Myspace Charts. He has lent his songwriting talent to the indie film “She’s so Schizo.” He was behind several singles such as Answer, Don’t Go, You Loved a boy, Galaxies Apart and Happy.

Music Career

Early Beginnings, Sundays of Summer

Rosh Paulo started writing at the tender age of 7 but pursued making music when he was 15. During his college days he met his band mate Neil Vergara and decided to join a contest by writing an original song which would later be the hit single “Answer” and making a music video out of it. The video was shown on cable TV which gave them a following. After joining the contest, Rosh Paulo and Neil realized the unique chemistry they have while playing of each other which is why they decided to form a band in which Neil had his friends Mikel Sevilla and Andrew Santos to come in and play bass and drums respectively. The band then toured Manila and even shared the stage with legendary rock band The Dawn as they performed in front of thousands of people.

The Unfinished Album, Indefinite hiatus, Angels Dream in Our Sleep

While working on their debut album, scheduling and personal conflicts happened within the band members. The problems grew bigger until it came to the point that the members got burned out from touring, recording and the different opinions on what direction the band would take on which led to the band taking an indefinite hiatus. Rosh Paulo stated that the members went their own separate ways as they wanted to do something different but it never tarnished their friendship however, a reunion is unlikely to happen at this point in time. Rosh Paulo then decided to give fans the closure they needed and released the EP “, Angels Dream in Our Sleep” which contained acoustic tracks of their songs.

Solo Career, Starlights and Headlights

Rosh Paulo continued making music while on indefinite hiatus which is why he released his solo album “Starlights and Headlights.” Rosh Paulo described it as songs he wanted to write before but cannot due to the rock ambience of his former band. This album contained a more poppy sound than his previous works. The singles “Galaxies Apart” and “Back To You” generated radio airplay with minimal success. “Back to You” was also used as a soundtrack for the movie “She’s So Schizo.”

Thecalcul8n, Id.Ego.Superego.

During the summer, Rosh Paulo fell in love with the piano and decided to make a whole album with it. However, as he finished the songs, he realized that the songs doesn’t sound like what he would do and decided to use another name and a pseudonym as to not confuse his listeners. He then named himself “thecalcul8n” after the Regina Spektor song and went under the pseudonym “Cohen Espiritu.” He then released the album “Id.Ego.Superego” which is a tribute to his nursing career and spawned the hits “You Loved a Boy” and “Where are we?” which became a minor hit but failed to capitalize the success of his previous outputs.

Happy, Live EP and future projects Due to the low reception from his last work, Rosh Paulo realized that the audience today would rather listen more to singles than a whole album. He then started to release singles such as “My Stupid Heart” and “Happy” which fared much better than his previous album. He then performed the songs live and released an EP for free on his 22nd birthday. Currently, Rosh Paulo is writing a bunch of new songs in which he said would mash the sound of his work as a solo artist and his work as “thecalcul8n.” A new album is expected to drop by next year.

Other projects Rosh Paulo has worked with his cousin Paul Kristian on the album “US 2” and their side project “The Silent Lambs” under the pseudonym Lamb 1.

Personal Life Rosh Paulo is a Filipino and is a Registered Nurse and a Certified Renal Nurse. He has worked a podcaster and a radio dj sometime before.
