National Archives and Records Administration

June 7, 2007

This is in response to your recent inquiry to the National Archives concerning permission to quote, copy or publish documents (including photographs) from the holdings of the National Archives.

The documents in which you are interested were created or accumulated for official purposes by entities of the U.S. Government. As such they are not subject to copyright or other proprietary restrictions; they are in the public domain. They may be quoted, copied, published, or otherwise used by you as intended. These provisions also apply to the captured German records in our custody, including the Heinrich Hoffmann collections.

Sincerely,

TIMOTHY K. NENNINGER
Chief, Modern Military Records
