Geographic Data Technologies (GDT) was a digital map content creation pioneer as a private developer of geography information systems (GIS) data. GDT was founded in July 11, 1983 by Don Cooke. Don privatized digital map content for sale to businesses and governments alike. He began by taking the first generation of digital maps, known as, TIGER files that the US Census Bureau created and added more useful content to it.
GDT was successful because it provided complete, current, and comprehensive geographic digital map content in a useful format. GDT offered street, postal, census and other geographic databases, to private corporations. GDT was a wholly owned subsidiary of R.L. Polk.
GDT was an employer of choice from 1997-2001 and in 2000 was awarded New Hampshire's "Top 10 Best Companies to Work For".
Finally, in late 2004 it was bought by TeleAtlas for the digital map content creation process. TeleAtlas went on to continue to sell digital map content to companies like Google, Mapquest, as well as others before it was bought by TomTom in 2008.
