UAN condition, or uniform asymptotic negligibility condition, is a concept in statistics. Its main idea is that if we have n random variables, the variance of anyone of them does not have significant influence on the overall variance of the n random variables. UAN condition is very useful when proving central limit theorem. In fact, it is almost a necessary condition for CLT.

Xiao-Li Meng received his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Fudan University in 1982, and his M.A. degree and Ph.D. degree in Statistics in 1987 and 1990 from Harvard University. When Meng was pursuing his degrees at Harvard, his advisor was Donald Rubin. Instead of staying in Harvard, Meng found a faculty job in The University of Chicago in 1993 and became a professor at Department of Statistics and the College, The University of Chicago in 2000. In 2001, Xiao-Li Meng returned to Harvard and became a professor at Department of Statistics. In 2004, Meng became Chair of the department. Then, Meng was chosen as Whipple V.N. Jones Professor of Statistics at Harvard. Because of his success in increasing the number of both undergraduate student and graduate student in Department of Statistics, Meng was promoted to Dean of Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences on August 14, 2012.

Xiao-Li Meng's research interests include Statistical inference with partially observed data, pre-processed data, and simulated data; Quantifying statistical information and efficiency in scientific studies; Statistical principles and foundational issues; Effective deterministic and stochastic algorithms for Bayesian and likelihood computation; Markov chain Monte Carlo; Bayesian inference, ranking and mapping; Multi-resolution modelling for signal and image data; Statistical issues in astronomy and astrophysics; Modelling and imputation in health and medical studies; and Elegant mathematical statistics. Until January 2013, the number of citation of Meng is more than 8,000, and almost half of them occurred after 2008.

His research interests include inference foundations and philosophies, models of all flavors, deterministic and stochastic algorithms, signal extraction in physical, social and medical sciences, and occasionally elegant mathematical statistics. Since 2004 Meng has been Chair of Harvard's Department of Statistics, where he has helped create innovative new statistics courses designed to give students a more positive impression of the subject. The department has certainly socialized well with other academic areas, and will continue to offer interdisciplinary classes. So far, courses have been offered jointly with the Law School, the School of Public Health, the Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Economics, and Astronomy.
