Dennis McIntyre Born: June 4, 1942 Died: February 1, 1990

Dennis McIntyre was born in Detroit on June 4, 1942 as the second son of school teacher Kathleen Donovan and Public Relations exec.Cornelius McIntyre. He attended grade school at the Hall of Divine Child in Monroe, Michigan. He attended the University of Detroit High School in Detroit, MI, graduating in 1960. He was educated at the University of Michigan (Bachelor of Arts) graduating in the class of 1964. Mr. McIntyre earned a Master of Fine Arts and Carnegie-Mellon University, graduating in 1966.

Mr. McIntyre moved to New York City in 1966 to begin his formal writing career. His first play, CHILDREN IN THE RAIN, was produced in New York’s Cherry Lane Theatre in 1970. His play, MODIGLIANI, was produced Off Broadway at the Astor Place Theatre in 1980 and was produced in London later that year. His next play, SPLIT SECOND, was produced at New York’s Theatre Four in 1984, with later productions in Los Angeles, London, Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Philadelphia. His play ESTABLISHED PRICE, was produced at the Philadelphia Festival Theatre.

McIntyre wrote his most notable play, NATIONAL ANTHEMS, throughout his life. It began as a play entitled THE PARTY CRASHER and evolved in many re-writings over the years. Mr. McIntyre taught a playwriting seminar/workshop at the University of Michigan for three years. McIntyre wrote one novel, THE DIVINE CHILD, which was drawn from his experiences at The Hall of Divine Child boarding school. The remains unpublished to this day.

Mr. McIntyre's plays have been produced by many theatre companies around the world including a revival performance of NATIONAL ANTHEMS at The Old Vic Theatre in London in 2007.

Dennis McIntyre's film work includes an original screenplay for Sidney Poitier and Columbia Pictures entitled NOBLE, the screenplay of his play SPLIT SECOND for Motown Productions, an original screenplay based on the life of Curtis Silwa, founder of the Guardian Angels subway patrols in New York City, for director John G. Avildsen and a film for Orion Pictures, STATE OF GRACE.

Mr. McIntyre received the Avery and Jule Hopwood Award in Playwriting and Fiction, an MCA Fellowship in Playwriting, two Shubert Fellowships in Playwriting, a Rockefeller Grant for Production, the Playbill Award for Playwriting, an National Endowment for the Arts in Playwriting, a National Endowment for the Arts in Production and the Kennedy Center/American Express Award in Playwriting.

The Dennis McIntyre Prize is given at The University of Michigan to a notable Undergraduate Playwright each year.

Mr. McIntyre died on February 1, 1990 of cancer. He is survived by his parter Karen Riedel.
