The Hawthorndene Heroes are an Australian Cricket Club, set up in Adelaide, South Australia. The team currently competes in First Class league VII.22, One Day league V.108, Twenty20 International league V.165, and the Australian One Day Cup at the beginning of each season. The home ground is Hawthorndene Oval, but is better known to all as Santos Stadium. The club began due to insistent pressure from the surrounding area, and after much deliberation pattylincho took control in mid 2008. The beginning term of the coach was so farcical, he went to the lengths of renaming to pattylenko and remains coach today.

Inaugural Game

edit

The Hawthorndene Heroes went out for their inaugural match having suffered some terrible warm up match defeats, but the first competitive game was an outright success, winning by 272 runs. The match was held in Victoria against Kealba CC.

Maloney 3/16 (5 Overs)
Hawthorndene Heroes won by 272 runs
Stinga CG, Victoria
Attendance: 4,153
Player of the match: Maurice Candlish

Winning the toss and electing to bat, which would be seen to be a rare decision in seasons to come, the Hawthorndene Heroes got off to a flying start with an opening partnership of 228 between Candlish and Branch. Branch later retired from all forms of cricket, and Candlish moved to dare devils 11 where he played for some time, and eventually retired some time later.

No players from that original match remain at the club, as coach pattylenko performed a major skills test in late 2008 and most of them failed. Those who failed moved on to other clubs, or otherwise retired.

OD Demolition of Ray Rays

edit

Previously in the first round of the competition, the Heroes had destroyed Ray Rays to take top spot on the ladder. This time, the demolition was even more special and guaranteed the premiership.

Player of the match: Matt Wilding

The match began with Wilding and van Blerk ripping through the Ray Rays lineup. van Blerk removed the top order, exposing the heart of the batting order to Wilding, who proceeded to rip it out like an Aztec priest performing a sacrifice. He took the Heroes' first ever hattrick, and stole victory for the Heroes. His wickets were; Pead b. Wilding, Farrow hit wckt b. Wilding, and Gouws lbw. Wilding.

Van Blerk played a support role, but still contributed greatly by removing 3 of the top 4 batsmen. He also bowled 4 maidens and only conceded five runs, which was a tremendous effort. Together the two strike bowlers secured OD victory and there were signs of great things to come.

Qualifying for OD IV

edit

The end of season 14, the stage is set. The Heroes have finished top of their OD V league, the Thunder Chickens have finished 6th just above automatic relegation. The Heroes are hoping for a historic win to secure their first venture into OD IV. Thunder Chickens won the toss and chose to field, and the rest is history.

Hawthorndene Heroes won by 58 runs
The Chook Pen, New South Wales
Attendance: 17760
Player of the match: Paramjeet Tariq

The Heroes started in trouble, stumbling to 1/18, then 2/84 as both openers were removed. This brought together Tariq and Barry, who put on a 190 run stand to save the match. Nixon came in for the last two overs, but it was Tariq who did the late hitting to finish with 11 fours, and a team total of 285.

The Thunder Chickens started well with a century opening stand, but after Williams removed both openers the Thunder Chickens' middle order collapsed. Larkin and Heinrich combined to remove 6 batsmen in the space of 33 runs. Van Blerk finished off the tail, and suddenly the Heroes were through to OD IV for the very first time! Beers and meat pies were given out free all round, except for Beaty because his love of the pies is so well known that giving him free pies would see a worldwide pie drought. Not to mention that he got out for 4.

The Tied Test (T20)

edit

Not quite the famous tied test of West Indies vs Australia, but almost even more impressive was the tied T20 match between the Heroes and Manly Sea Eagles. Most fans felt robbed, but manager pattylenko thought that the result was justified considering the makeup of the Sea Eagles squad.

Tie

Player of the match: Shaun Easton

While Easton of the Sea Eagles got MOTM, the day belonged to young 17 year old Christopher Cochrane. In only his first season for the Heroes he had the pressure of wicketkeeping through the Sea Eagles innings, and then was forced to save the day during the Heroes' innings. After Karthelis, Tariq, Barry, and Nixon failed to contribute significantly, it was left to Cochrane to save the match and he did so in style, smashing 5 sixes and 2 fours on his way to a quickfire 45 not out.

The tie left the Heroes in fifth place for the season, and mixed feelings were held with many fans believing that the game should have been won. Realisticly, the game should have been lost and it was only the heroics of Cochrane that saw a tie occuring. He truly earnt the title of Hawthorndene Hero in that game.

Bellevue Blaze Rivalry

edit

Since the creation of the club, the Bellevue Blaze have existed under two different sponsors and one independant manager. They first began as The Solo Subs, sponsored by Solo, then changed to Bellevue Cougars, sponsored by the Foster's Group. They now go by the name of Bellevue Blaze and are managed and coached independantly by pit_steel.

The rivalry has brought many famous games which will go down in history as awesome and the Hawthorndene Heroes currently hold a substantial lead.

*special event

The first five matches were won by The Solo Subs, but after sponsorship was lost, the Heroes have dominated. The 12 match winning streak was ended in March 2010, when Bellevue won a closely fought 2nd XI clash.

The games have a tendency to be won by the team that wins the toss, which is usually Hawthorndene, and pattylenko strategically has no strategy and automatically chooses to field. Only 3 out of 17 wins have come through batting first.

Four Twenty20 games have been contested, with the record level at 2 all. However, Twenty20 friendlies have not been offered since early 2009.

Two players have claimed man of the match honours in a losing team, Bernie Brennan for Bellevue where he took 5 for 10, and Samuel Wynand who scored an unbeaten 55 (52), despite Dakshesh Bhagyaraj scoring 61 (66) for the winning team.
