RMS Football Club is a five-a-side team based in the City of Plymouth. They were formed in 2011 and compete in the LMFives league with seven other teams.

History

Founded

The club was founded in 2011, when five housemates, all students at The University of Plymouth, started up a five-a-side football team after attending a Futsal taster session. The remaing two housemates and two other University of Plymouth students were signed on to the first team, and RMS was formed.

The first tournament RMS competed in was the Student's Cup at Goals, Plymouth. Although failing to make it out of the group stage, with a tourament record of 1W 3D 1L, there was enough shown by the team for RMS to enter LMFives where they would participate in weekly league matches.

Promise

The debut match for RMS in LMFives was against Builders who finished runners-up in the 2010-11 season. Despite going 0-2 and 1-3 down, RMS fought back to earn the first league point in their history with a 3-3 draw. The next match was against the league favourites, Wingmen, RMS's inexperience was to be found out and they fell to their heaviset ever defeat of 1-9. RMS soon bounced back, and three consecutive wins followed to propel them into the top half for the first time.

Expectations

It was soon clear that the objective was for RMS to gain a top half finish and possibly battle it out with Builders for third. Steady form followed with 3 wins and 3 losses and RMS were entered into the Challenge Cup. After grinding out a 3-2 win against the tourament favourites in the group stage, RMS gained the belief they could go on and win the tournament. A second meeting for the sides in the semi-final proved a simple task for RMS who breezed into the final as 5-1 victors. Their final opponents were also familiar opposition with the sides drawing at the group stage, RMS took a deserved 1-0 lead at halftime but fatigue set in and they conceeded three second half goals to end the tournamnet as runners-up.

Decline

Although the RMS players had the highs of the tournament still with them, it was not ideal that they had a leagues game in the evening against rivals Dyslexia Untied. In a physical game where both teams had a man dismissed, RMS fell to a 2-3 defeat which would be the first game in a 6-game winless streak. 3 of these coming at the end of the winter season in which RMS held on for their objective of a top half finsih, ending the season in 4th.

Revival

The easter season proved a disappointing one for RMS, who only gained 4 points from their first 6 games. Going into the final game versus Dyslexia Untied, RMS sat 7th in the table knowing only a win by 5 clear goals would allow them to jump their opposition and end the season in 6th. It wasn't looking good for RMS who conceeded early to a long range deflected shot, but a sudden turnaround led by captain Bailey who scored 4 first half goals put RMS 5-1 up at the break. Another setback was delt when RMS conceeded early in the half yet again, but this time it was Blackman who finished off the job by adding 2 second half goals to the one he got in the first half, to spark scenes of celebration at the final whistle as RMS obtained the 5 goal cushion they needed to jump rivals Dyslexia Untied.

Colours, crest & anthem

• RMS have played in blue and white since 2011. The 2011–2012 season's kit is made by Adidas.
• The club's crest is a simple silhouette of a player scissor kicking a ball surrounded by a crest with a script underneath. The three stars donate the three draws they achieved in their first ever pre-season tournament.
• The club's official anthem is You Spin Me Right Round (Like A Record) by Dead or Alive, which originates from the club's name.

Rivalries

After a fierce and physical first match with Dyslexia Untied, in a game which RMS went on to win 4-2, an instant rivalry was sparked. Since that game, all encounters have proved intense with 2 red cards coming in one match.

Despite being scouted by several Futsal teams before the season began, Bailey decided to stay on with RMS. Although he ended the season as the clubs top goalscorer, his inconsistent form infront of goal coincided with the team's form and especially during the five consecutive defeats in which he failed to score. Never the less he is known as the star player of RMS and when is not in the starting XI, his golden right foot, and miraculous halfway line strikes are always called upon at some point in the game. Miles Bennett "Miles" Summer signing from Cunning Stunts along with Burnside. A versatile player who has been deployed in midfield and defence and also chipped in with 5 goals in his debut season for RMS. He was the only player of RMS to pick up yellow and red cards during his 20 matches. Miles has now left RMS after failing to agree terms on a new deal when his contract expired in May 2012. Tim Blackman "Blackman" One of the original five founders of RMS. Blackman is a hard working attacker whose partnership with Bailey gave RMS a 60% win rate when they both started, and his vital role in the final game of the season, where he scored his first league hat-trick, was enough for RMS to end the season on a high. Although he may be disappointed with his 9 goal league tally, he more than made up for it with countless assists throughout the season and also scored vital cup goals. Ryan Brewer "PB" One of the original five founders of RMS. With his concrete, unmoving legs, PB's blocks and rock like defensive play has proved reliable for RMS and he has flourished when in the team alongside Miles during his 5 consecutive starts towards the end of the season. Sam Burnside "Burnside" One of the original five founders of RMS. Vice captain Burnside was a summer signing from Cunning Stunts along with Miles. Burnside proved a consistent midfield goal threat scoring in 62% of his matches, but was also always tactically aware to drop deep when he needed to. Mike Edwards "Bramble" Despite a promising start, scoring on his RMS debut, Bramble never managed to find the net again, and after missing several games through injury, struggled to regain his place in the team only starting a third of RMS's games. Dave Harris "Big D" Big D was signed as an emergency loan and thrust into the side against Reem Team. Despite impressing with several top drawer saves, he was unable to prevent RMS from falling to a 5-1 defeat. Luke Higgins "Higgs" Reserve team player Higgs earned himself three first team starts and looks set the break into the setup many more occasions next season. Chris Lawler "Rupert" One of the original five founders of RMS. An ever present for the first 18 games of the season. When in the right frame of mind and with vocal players around him, he was a solid defender with a tendancy to creep forward and create chances for the team. Known to score a spectacular goal in training, he never found the goal scoring touch in a game situation. Dan Stretton "Stretts" Powerful attacker Stretts had the highest win percentage of any RMS player during the league season. Although he missed a third of RMS's games, he was still and important figure on and off the pitch and earned the role of player / assistant manager. Matt Warren "Matt" Another emergency loan signing, Matt found the net twice in his only game for the club, in what was to be one of the most entertaining games of the season versus Builders. Harrison Woods "Northern" After being thrust in goal during the pre-season tournament, Northern keept hold of the gloves and proved to be one of the key players for RMS throughout the campaign. He also made several outfield appearences showing he has the ability and awareness of a top defender. His performances earned recognition from his teammates as he was voted the first ever RMS Player of the Year. Currently enjoying a summer loan spell with Sixfields Rangers. Nation Player 11 MF ENG Miles Bennett Stadium RMS play at Stadio Nancy Astor in central Plymouth, part of The University of Plymouth's sporting complex. The ground is unable to cater for any capacity due to the width and length of the pitch. For cup competitions, RMS take up a temporary outdoor artificial pitch at Goals in Plymouth, near Plymouth Argyle's Home Park. As well as football, Stadio Nancy Astor has played host to many exams for The University of Plymouth students, as well as many other sports ranging from Badminton to Indoor Cricket.
