History

edit

Tim Payne, the founder of Team Pain, began skating in 1972. He began skating on water ski lifts's and in parking lots throughout Orlando, FL. Tim started to building mini quarter pipes in the mid 1970's. The materials he used were construction sites in the area; he would pick nails up off the ground and grab 2 x 4's. The parents of a friend of his allowed him to build the ramps in their front yard and aided in providing some used plywood. He was able to build an entire vert ramp for about $12.00.

In 1976, Tim started skating in swimming pools ,also known as bowls. By 1977, when Tim was still in high school, he had built three half pipes within two miles of each other. The first half pipe was built in a friend's backyard. The parents of his friend were not too happy with it and it was eventually adjoined to the half pipe Tim has in his back yard. the half pipe was approximately 32 feet wide and has a 8 foot roll in on the side. The ramps that Tim did build outlasted some of the skate parks that were created in the early 1980's.

During the 1980's, Tim recalls not need to pay to skate and not having to wear pads that continously fell off. Many of the concrete skate parks even today, require a skater to wear protective gear. Bud's Ramp, a ramp that was built in Tim's backyard, opened up his exposure to the skateboarding world. The ramp was 32 feet wide and had 9 foot transitions. Tim sent out flyers to every skate shop throughout the East Coast. Through this event, he established many contacts that would later lead to some of Tim's most memorable projects.

Tim began working on the West Coast with Paul Schmitt, he refers to this as his big break. He was asked to set up demo ramps initally in Florida and then in California for the first National Skateboarding Association (NSA).Though this was a padi job, Tim hadn't begun to think of this as something you could make a business out of.

Tim had done a ramp for the Hot Tropic Contest in Mobile, AL. Lance Mountain had seen Tim's work at the event and asked him to come to California for a secret project. The secret project was for the Search of the Animal Chin.
