  • 5 Apr 1995 p 2 SMH "Liberals close in on troubled senator" Margo Kingston - "Senior Federal Liberals made it clear privately that unless the conservative Federal MP for Moore, Mr Paul Filing, survived attempts by the Crichton-Browne faction to roll him at his preselection on Saturday, Federal intervention was inevitable. The "NCB faction" has the numbers sewn up to topple Mr Filing, who Mr Howard said this week was "a good, active, energetic local member" who had turned a marginal seat into a safe Liberal seat. Liberal sources said the main contender was Mr Filing's division president, Ms Marie Louise Wordsworth, 63, the president of the West Australian secession movement. The other main contender, also backed by some elements of the NCB faction, is Mr Paul Stevenage, condemned for anti-Asian comments during a controversial term as Guild President of Murdoch University in the late 1980s."

  • Craig Skehan, SMH 10/4 p.5 "Federal Liberals seek to stop WA factional war" - Robert Hill flew to Perth. Mr Filing had appeared on the "Sunday" program warning "that internal power plays in the State could cost the Liberals four Federal seats". Howard had said Filing (paper's quote) "had not helped his prospects by continuing to publicly attack senior West Australian Liberal figures". Filing was taking it to State Council and blamed Crichton-Browne.
  • Paul McGeough SMH 10/4 p.6 "How a Liberal winner became a backroom loser" - quoted NCB on Thur 6th - Senator Noel Crichton-Browne was asked on local radio about Mr Filing's chances. He said: "My best advice and my most regrettable advice is that Mr Filing is going to fall very short of his half (of the numbers) ... but if I can get the overwhelming support of the active forum of the Liberal Party between State conferences it says something for me and if Mr Filing can't manage a mere 12 branches in his own division he's clearly got a problem." Noted vote was 41-29, discussed branch stacking.
