Biography

edit

Ian M. Hale was born in Brighton, England in August 1982, but was raised variously in London, Somerset and Kent. He began playing the piano at the age of six following a less than successful attempt at the drums. He started songwriting as a teenager but didn’t realise he could sing until his early 20s. At 13 Ian sold his guitar to buy a BMX bike, but got back into music again via a spell listening to hip hop and death metal. Following a music diploma and art GNVQ in Kent he studied music then film at Roehampton University. Since then, he has concentrated on his singing and songwriting, supplementing his income with a bizarre array of jobs, from film runner to barman, removal man, fruit farmer, chef in a Vietnamese restaurant and, latterly, coordinator for a London music college. He is now based in Bermondsey, South London. Music runs in his family –his uncle, Keith Hale, is a songwriter and keyboardist who has worked with the likes of Hawkwind, Ginger Baker and Toyah Wilcox. Ian has reflected Keith’s influence by recording one of his songs, Suddenly It’s You, for Successor. Ian M. Hale (the M’s for ‘Matthew’) is also a band. As well as playing solo gigs he tours with musicians including Moss Beynon Juckes (vocals), Jo Silverston (Cello) and Andrea Adriano (drums).

Ian’s debut single was ‘Don’t Say You Love Me’ in November 2008. It was picked up by John Kennedy and Jon Hillcock on XFM, BBC Introducing and 6Music. In May 2009 this was followed by ‘Loss’ –which got wider airplay on both XFM and BBC6Music. Ian’s cover artwork is created by his long-time friend, award-winning illustrator David Callow.
