Julie Bentley

Julie Bentley is a Professor of Optics at the Institute of Optics in Rochester, New York. She is an award winning expert in Optical Design and is a fellow of OSA and SPIE[1]. She has professional experience designing lenses for applications in aerospace, lithography, and medical devices.

Education

She received her B.S and PhD from the University of Rochester. Her PhD thesis focused on the integration of the design and manufacture of gradient-index optical systems.[2] She joined the University of Rochester, Institute of Optics faculty in 1998[1][2]. She has been teaching at the institute ever since while also supporting consulting work through her company Bentley Optical Design. Her main interests are in geometrical optics, optical design, and engineering tolerance.

Dr. Bentley teaches several course at the University of Rochester, Institute of Optics including: . She also teaches courses for SPIE professional members at conferences like Photonics West each year,[3][2] She is the co-author of the Lens Design Field Guide, which is used by experts across the world as a quick reference.[4]
