Das Fest ist eine der größten Open-Air-Veranstaltungen in Deutschland und findet seit 1985 jährlich in der Günther-Klotz-Anlage, unmittelbar neben der Europahalle in Karlsruhe statt. Organisiert wird Das Fest seit Ende 2014 vom Team der Karlsruhe Event GmbH, die aus der Das Fest GmbH entstand. Der Termin war bzw. ist – außer in den ersten Jahren – jeweils am letzten Wochenende vor den baden-württembergischen Sommerferien, also Ende Juli. Überregionale Bekanntheit erlangte Das Fest als Musikfestival, welches der Hauptbestandteil dieser Veranstaltung ist.

DAS FEST (short form, engl. The Festival) is one of the biggest Open-air concerts in Germany, which has taken place in Karlsruhe since 1985 and is organized by Karlsruhe Event GmbH. After the first few years of existence, its date was set for the last weekend before the summer holidays in Baden-Württemberg, which starts at the end of July. The festival has gained national popularity with its concerts, making up the main part of the event.

Program and Organization

Das von den Organisatoren verfolgte Ziel unterscheidet sich deutlich von anderen großen deutschen Festivals, die durch Konzentration auf bestimmte Musikrichtungen polarisieren, denn es sollen alle Bevölkerungsschichten angesprochen und unterhalten werden. Rund um die Musikbühnen, auf denen regionale, nationale und internationale Künstler auftreten, gibt es jedes Jahr ein umfangreiches Sport-, Kinder- und Familienprogramm. Für Kinder gibt es das Gelände der mobilen Spielaktion, wo auch eine Betreuung zur Verfügung steht. Ein Fest-Café, die Theaterbühne und das Klassik-Konzert Sonntag morgens auf der Hauptbühne zielt auf ein älteres Publikum.

Program and organization

DAS FEST has been organized by Karlsruhe Event GmbH since 2014. Its organizers pursue an aim clearly different to other big German festivals, which polarize in concentrating on certain genres, whereas DAS FEST is to attract and to entertain all social groups. Alongside the music stages hosting regional, national and international artists, there is a broad program (including sports) for children and families each year. Children can visit a mobile game area with included childcare, set up by the Karlsruhe initiative Mobile Spielaktion. Adults, however, are appealed to by the Fest-Café, a theater stage and a classical concert, which always takes place on the main stage on Sunday morning.

Jährlich finden mehr als 200.000 Menschen an den drei Tagen den Weg zum Fest, im Jahre 2006 sprachen die Veranstalter sogar von 330.000 Besuchern. 2009 wurden etwa 400.000 Besucher gezählt, was einen neuen Besucherrekord darstellte. Der Eintritt in das Gelände mit Sport-, Familienbereich, Zelt- und DJ-Bühne ist kostenlos, jedoch benötigt man für den Hügelbereich um die Hauptbühne seit 2010 am Freitag und Samstag und seit 2011 auch am Sonntag Zugangstickets zu 5 €, ab 2018 dann 10 € pro Tag.

More than 200,000 people attend the festival every year and in 2006 the number was as a high as 330,000 according to the event organizers. In 2009 the total number of visitors reached a record of 400,000. Entry into the sport, family and camping grounds is free, however, since 2010 tickets costing 5€ a day are required for the mound and mainstage on the Friday and Saturday. In 2011, this was extended to the Sunday and in 2018 the price increased to 10€.

Im Sommer 1984 organisierte Tihomir Lozanovski (Wolkenreise und jetziges Mitglied der Band Trigon) ein Open Air in Karlsruhe. Die nötigen Genehmigungen wurden beim Umweltamt und bei der Polizei eingeholt. Nach diesem ersten Open Air spaltete sich die Gruppe der Organisatoren und Das Fest wurde ins Leben gerufen. Die Basis dafür stellten die erkämpften Sondergenehmigungen vom Vorjahr. Ursprünglich war die Idee, Karlsruher Bands dem Karlsruher Publikum näher zu bringen.

History

Tihomir Lozanowsky (Wolkenreise and current member of the band Trigon), organized an Open-air concert in Karlsruhe during the Summer of 1984. The organizers obtained all the necessary permits from the Environment Agency and the police. Following this initial Open-air concert, the group of organizers split up and DAS FEST was born. The special permits from the previous year provided the groundwork for the festival. Originally, the idea was to bring bands from Karlsruhe and the local community together.

Im Lauf der Jahre entwickelte sich Das Fest vom kleinen Open Air-Festival zu einem überregional bekannten Musikfestival, das von jährlich über 200.000 Besuchern besucht wird. Einhergehend mit dieser Entwicklung wurde das Konzept von Das Fest immer wieder erweitert.

1998 wurde erstmals das Fest-Café durchgeführt. Hier wird schon in der Aufbau-Woche vor Das Fest Bewirtung (hauptsächlich im Biergartenformat) sowie abendliches Musikprogramm auf einer kleinen Bühne geboten. Im Jahr 2000 folgte mit einer eigenen DJ-Bühne die nächste nachhaltige Erweiterung, die großen Anklang fand und sich bald als fester Bestandteil von Das Fest etablierte.

DAS FEST has evolved over the years from a small open-air festival to a Music festival, renowned beyond the local region and visited by more than 200.000 people every year. The concept of the festival has constantly been extended at the same time with this evolution. In 1998, the café of DAS FEST was conducted for the first time. In the preparation week before the festival, food and drinks are offered (mainly in the form of beer garden) as well as an evening music program on a small stage. In 2000, the next sustainable expansion of the festival followed with its own DJ-stage, which received a big resonance and became soon established as an integral part of the festival.

Ingwer-kraeuter (talk) 12:33, 22 November 2018 (UTC) Einen größeren Einschnitt gab es 2001: Da Das Fest sich ausschließlich aus Getränkeeinnahmen finanziert, wurde das Festivalgelände erstmals komplett umzäunt und die Besucher beim (weiterhin kostenlosen) Einlass auf mitgebrachte Speisen und Getränke kontrolliert. Dies war im Vorfeld stark kritisiert worden. Die Besucherzahlen zeigten, dass die Popularität von Das Fest darunter nicht gelitten hat. Im Zuge der Umzäunung wurde das Gelände in Richtung Westen vergrößert, so dass die Zeltbühne einen eigenen Platz fand. Auch der Funpark, der bisher vor der Europahalle stattgefunden hatte, wurde nun als Sportpark ins Festivalgelände integriert und in den folgenden Jahren stetig erweitert. Neben offenen Angeboten z. B. im Jonglier- und Einradareal finden hier inzwischen jährlich auch „ernsthafte“ Wettkämpfe wie deutsche Skateboard-Meisterschaft in der Half-Pipe oder das nationale Volleyclub-Turnier statt.

A greater turning-point was reached in 2001: Due to the festival being mainly financed by the sale of beverages, the festival grounds were firstly completely fenced and once at the (still free) entrance, visitors were checked for brought food and drinks. Initially, this was heavily criticised. The number of visitors showed that the festival's popularity didn't suffer from this. Over the course of the fencing process the grounds were expanded westwards, so the tent stage could have its own place. The "Funpark", which, so far, had taken place in the Europahalle, was integrated as a sports park into the festival grounds, and has been on a constant expansion-mode. Alongside activities such as Juggling and riding unicycles, serious competitions such as the German Skateboard Championship in the Half-Pipe or the national Volleyclub tournament take place since then each year here.

Neben den inhaltlichen Erweiterungen stand in den letzten Jahren aufgrund der stetig steigenden Besucherzahlen vor allem der Sicherheitsaspekt von Das Fest im Fokus der Organisatoren. So wurde das Sicherheitskonzept in Zusammenarbeit mit Polizei und Sanitätsdiensten jedes Jahr weiter verbessert, was sich sowohl in einer behutsam geänderten Geländeaufteilung (keine Stände neben Hauptbühne, Wegführung) als auch vor den Eingängen von Das Fest niederschlägt. Hier wurden in den letzten Jahren verstärkt Jugendschutzteams eingesetzt, die aus Polizisten, Jugendsozialarbeitern und Sanitätern bestehen. Sie sollen den übermäßigen Alkoholkonsum unter Jugendlichen schon vor dem Betreten des Festivalgeländes eindämmen.

In the last few years the organization focused besides the content extensions mainly on aspect of security due to the constantly rising number of visitors. In cooperation with the police and medical corps the security concept was improved every year. These improvements effected for example the division of the festival site (no stalls near the main stage, improved system of paths) as well as the layout and organization of the entrance area. Youth protection teams consisting of policemen, medics and social workers were stationed in front of the entrances to contain excessive use of alcohol among minors before entering the festival site.

Nachdem 2006 beim Auftritt von Seeed der Einlass auf das Festgelände erstmals wegen Überfüllung vorübergehend gestoppt werden musste, kündigte der Stadtjugendausschuss an, Das Fest nach 2007 nicht mehr in der bisherigen Organisationsform durchführen zu können. Gründe hierfür waren neben der persönlichen Haftung des Vereinsvorsitzenden im Verlustfall auch der immense personelle und finanzielle Aufwand, der zu Lasten der originären Aufgaben des Stadtjugendausschusses geht.

After a 2006 performance by Seeed, the entry to the Festgelände had to be halted for the first time due to overcrowding. As a result, the youth committee of the city announced that DAS FEST would not be continuing in the same manner as beforehand. Next to the fact that the chairman of the club would be liable for personal losses if one should occure, one of the main reasons was the immense financial outlay, and the need for a large pool of staff, which the committee would have to carry.

Von den fünf als Alternativen vorgelegten Konzepten stimmte der Gemeinderat der Stadt Karlsruhe am 25. September 2007 schließlich für die Gründung eines sogenannten „gesondert geführten Betriebs“. Außerdem wurde für zunächst drei Jahre ein städtischer Zuschuss von je bis zu 150.000 Euro zugesagt, womit der Erhalt von Das Fest bis 2010 gesichert sein sollte. Dennoch gab der Stadtjugendausschuss am 29. September 2009 bekannt, dass er das Fest nicht weiterführen könne. Als Gründe gab er den Verlust in Höhe von 180.000 Euro beim Fest 2009 sowie das große Sicherheitsproblem an.

In the end, on 25 September 2007, the city council of Karlsruhe voted for the establishment of a so-called “separate concession” or “separately managed concession”, one of five alternative models presented to the council. Additionally, the city promised to fund Das Fest by up to €150,000 for three years initially; this was supposed to keep the festival going until the year 2010. On 29 September 2009, however, the city’s youth committee announced that it was not able to continue the festival. A loss of €180,000 in the year 2009 and the significant security problem were reasons given by the committee for this decision.

Im Dezember 2009 beschloss der Gemeinderat, das Fest unter Führung der Das Fest GmbH fortzuführen.Das Fest 2010 fand vom 23. bis 25. Juli 2010 statt und kostete erstmals Eintritt. Das Gelände wurde in einen kleineren Sport- und Familienbereich, der weiterhin kostenlos zugänglich ist, und einen größeren Musikbereich eingeteilt. Im Sport- und Familienbereich befinden sich die DJ-Bühne, die Zeltbühne, eine Infomeile und verschiedene Aktionsangebote. Der Musikbereich umschließt die Hauptbühne um den sog. „Mount Klotz“ sowie die Kleinkunstbühne. Für den Musikbereich wurden erstmals Tageskarten zum Preis von fünf Euro für den Fest-Freitag und -Samstag und seit 2011 auch für den bisher kostenlosen Festsonntag verkauft.

In December 2009, the municipal council decided to continue the festival under the guidance of 'Das Fest GmbH'. DAS FEST took place from 23-25 July 2010 and for the first time cost money for entry. The site was divided into a smaller sports and family area, which continues to be accessible free of charge, and a larger music area. The sports and family area includes the DJ stage, the tent stage, an information section and various special offers. The music area includes the main stage around the so-called 'Mount Klotz' as well as the disco stage.
