The genus Carex is represented by more than 200 species in New York. Here, they are organized by sections, using the modified version of Kenneth Kent Mackenzie’s system used in the Flora of North America.[1] Because the Carex genus has so many species in New York, the sections have been separared here into three groups, very roughly corresponding to G. Kükenthal's three subgenera Vignea, Carex, and Primocarex. Note that Mackenzie's and Kükenthal's systems were independent of each other and are combined here only for practical reasons.
