Video game design is a very tough job to enter and stay at the top of, and hopeful game designers need to be prepared for long hours and potential relocation depending on the amount of companies in their area that specialize in game development[1].
Essential skills for a Video Game Designer edit
Although talent is important, there are other skills gaming companies look for in potential designers, such as having the right qualifications and having a positive attitude[2]. Game designers need to develop strong communication skills in order to progress in their careers. Often times, game designers are required to coordinate their work with artists, programmers and other designers so being able to express their ideas clearly is important for collaboration [3]. Like all industries, video game design is constantly progressing as companies continue to make technological advances, so it is vital for game designers to educate themselves on these progressive changes. Being creative and developing your ability to tell stories are very important aspects of trying to become a video game designer as the challenges that you create for the players will ultimately dictate how successful the game will be [4].
