I've come here mostly to improve the numerous amount of animal welfare/rights articles; to make sure they all have a stable NPOV, to add an appropriate amount of reliable source;, and to add animal-welfare chapters/sub-chapters to articles on situations/companies that use animals. Though, my interests go deep into technology, and music, too. Really, whatever I come across in any field of subject matter; if it needs improvement, I will try to help. I want to be, in the near-future, a strong contributer of photos to articles without any photos. I feel this is very important, and enhances the Wikipedia experience. I am a visual-type person, and articles without any visual photo content really bother me, and I'm sure the same happens to many others. I feel great volunteering my time for such an incredible project. Furthermore, I have studied and have experience in voice-over work and am considering providing voice-over content to articles once I get some better equipment.

3 pet-peeves that bother me:

  • Articles without any photos/visual content
  • Articles with almost no citations
  • Vandalizers/Trolls; unfortunately Wikipedia has many

  • Endosulfan - A highly poisonous insecticide banned in over 50 countries from it's severity from poisoning animal life, and human life. It has not been banned in the US yet, but strong retaliation may soon change that.
  • Music Genome Project - A project that breaks down music with a mathematical algorithm to its fundamental level, which matches the essence of particular flavors in songs to a unique self-directed taste.

National animal welfare/protection laws

edit
In a nutshell: This is the only federal law that regulates the treatment of animals in experiments, exhibition, and in transport. The main focus of this law is on animals used in research and in experiments. It requires that if painful procedures are performed, proper anesthetic must be applied, and/or non-animal alternatives must be considered.
The bad:
  • This law excludes rats, mice, and birds bred for use in research.
  • The AWA also excludes farm animals that are used for food.
  • Frogs, fish and other similar species are also not covered by this act.
In a nutshell: The Humane Slaughter Act states that animals should be stunned prior to slaughter. The methods used for stunning are electrocution, gassing, and captive bolt stunning.
The bad:
  • Over 90% of the animals killed for food each year in America are birds. The Humane Slaughter Act does not cover birds.
  • The HSA does not cover animals killed in religious slaughter; for example, kosher, halal, and kashrut markets.
  • The HSA has a history of weak-enforcement.
  • The USDA will not stop a slaughter-line if cruelty is scene, because it will cause immeasurable losses to the industry.
  • The HSA only focuses on the last few minutes of the animals' lives, and has no effect on how the animal is treated before hand.

Laws we need

edit
  • Farmed animal protection act that protects all farmed animals, including birds. This act would also require that the animal be "stunned" in a controlled atmosphere killing method ONLY. Furthermore, animals must be kept in abuse-free, cruelty-free, clean, sanitary, roomy conditions during their entire lifetime. All young, as well, must be allowed an appropriate amount of time with their mothers. And workers/facilities that do not abide by this law will face heavy penalties.
  • Animals for entertainment protection act that prohibits the use of any and all wild and domesticated animals used in any type of circuses, or magic acts, with the exclusion of birds for magic purposes. This act will also stop animal cruelty in rodeos and will provide severe penalties.
