Nikolas Ross, also Nik Ross, was born July 3 1989. From Portland, Oregon, he now attends Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. He is perusing a Bachelor of Music in Choral/General Music Education and Vocal Performance. He is known for his LGBT advocacy in Greek (Fraternity/Sorority) society. He his a member of the Gamma Pi chapter of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He himself is gay.

Advocacy

The advocacy of Mr. Ross for the LGBT community has been limited to the Greek community, writing letters to the editor in favor for the non-discrimination of gays and lesbians in fraternity and sorority life. A copy of the most impacting letter he has written to date can be found here. He was also a participating member of Fair Wisconsin, a pro-gay marriage group.

Discrimination

In fall 2008, Mr. Ross became the recipient of multiple slanderous and threatening anti-gay messages on the white board outside his room. Lawrence security became involved, as well as university president Jill Beck.


On November 1st 2009, at 2am, Mr. Ross was the victim of a violent hate crime. An article of the attack can be found here. While not specifically mentioned, it is widely known through the Lawrence community of his involvement in the attack. Having only a few bruises and a black eye, Mr. Ross was the center of controversy as he did not immediately report the attack.
