Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[a] is an upcoming expansion pack to to Final Fantasy XIV, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Playstation 4 and PlayStation 5. As with the previous expansions and the base game, Naoki Yoshida will be producing and directing.[1] It is currently slated for release in Fall 2021, over two years after the release of the previous expansion, Shadowbringers.

Endwalker will be the conclusion to story that began with A Realm Reborn, and subsequent patches after release will begin a new story.[2]

Gameplay edit

Endwalker will introduce new battle content to the game, increasing the maximum level to 90.[3] Two new jobs were added-one of which being Sage, a healer class that uses weapons called Nouliths to provide barriers to its teammates.[4][2] Healer classes will be split into "pure" and "barrier" categories to help balance the role.[5] The downscaling of combat values will be implemented in order to avoid calculation errors, issues with the game's back end, and for visual clarity regarding the flying text for damage numbers.[6] These changes will be proportional and affect player statistics from level 51 to 80. Additionally, experience point values and requirements will also be compressed.[6] The armor slot of belts will be removed from the game in Endwalker, because it is the only armor or accessory piece that does not alter the player's cosmetics.[7] Belts will no longer be able to be obtained or equipped in the game, and the armory slots allocated to belts will be reallocated to primary weapons, and rings.[7] Other updates include new dungeons, raids, as well as a new player versus player mode, and additions to the Trust-system, which allows players explore dungeons with non-playable characters.[3]

Players will also be able to travel freely between data centers, an expansion upon the "World Travel System" which allows players to move their character between servers within a data center.[8]

Story edit

Setting and Characters edit

Endwalker will take place in the fictional world of Hydaelyn, a planet filled with multiple environments and climates covering several large continents. The expansion will be set in locales such as the island of Thavnair, its town Radz-at-Han, and the capital of the Garlean Empire, Garlemald.[3]

Story edit

Development edit

Endwalker was announced at an announcement showcase on February 6, 2021.[9] At the showcase director and producer Naoki Yoshida denied rumors that the game would shut down or that he would be leaving the development team.[7]

Development of the (INESRT MOON ZONE HERE) zone was challenging for the development team, having them interpret what it would be like to be in such a setting.[5]

With regard to the development of the new player versus player mode, they aimed to create something that is easy to play and has attractive rewards for all players.[5]

Although all the main dungeons for Endwalker will be Trust system compatible, further expansion of the system proved too costly to be put into the game.[5]
