Nicolas King (July 26, 1991) is an American born Broadway actor and singer. Credited with appearing on Broadway in Disney's "Beauty And The Beast", Herb Gardner's "A Thousand Clowns" with Tom Selleck and "Hollywood Arms" by Carrie Hamilton and Carol Burnett directed by Hal Prince. King also was selected by Liza Minnelli to go on tour with her in 2006.
Career
editKing was born and raised in Rhode Island, and after competing for Talent America in 1995, he won the National Youth Division and went on to film over a dozen national and international TV commercials for numerous products (Carvel, Oscar Meyer, Safeguard Soap, Got Milk?, KFC, Papa Gino's, Dr. Pepper etc.). He debuted on Broadway at 8 years old in Beauty And The Beast as Chip alongside Andrea McArdle as Belle. The production staff at the Tonight Show with Jay Leno caught wind of him and invited him to perform on the show on the same night at Brian McKnight and Tom Selleck. Selleck was impressed with him and recommended him to co-star with him in Herb Gardner's revival of A Thousand Clowns. The production got started in South Carolina and toured the country until it opened on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre on July 7th, 2001.
September 11 saw the close of A Thousand Clowns after its 7 month run accross the country. Selleck also brought King on as a guest with him on The View with Barbara Walters.
Following the close of "Clowns", Carol Burnett hand-picked King to be cast in her new production Hollywood Arms written by Burnett and her daughter, the late Carrie Hamilton. The production was directed by legendary Hal Prince. Hamilton died 3 months before production started in Chicago's Goodman Theatre. The show opened on Broadway at the Cort Theatre on October 31st, 2002 with Linda Lavin, Michelle Pawk (who won a Tony Award for her performance) and Frank Wood.
In 2002, he headlined with Liza Minnelli and Billy Gilman at a show in New York. Minnelli was so impressed with him that she invited him to go on tour with her 4 years later. He remains close friends with Minnelli, as her adopted Godson. He also appeared in the pilot episode of "Liza & David", the VH1 reality show following the life of Minnelli and her then husband David Gest that went sour and was pulled from release in early 2003.
In 2003, King was invited to perform on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon in Los Angeles. He has returned every Labor Day since then.
In 2004, Nicolas was cast as the voice of "Oscar" in Discovery Kids' "Kenny The Shark", part of it's 2004-2005 "Saturday Morning" programming.
Nicolas performed at the Mabel Mercer Foundation's "Cabaret Convention" in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, he was nominated for the "Noel Coward Cabaret Award" and won the 2010 "Julie Wilson Award". He appears regularly at the Metropolitan Room in New York City, and in Rhode Island where he resides.
