Article Evaluation

The article I chose was the Textile industry in Bangladesh. The article follows the history of the textile industry from it's introduction in Bangladesh to its current position in the industry as a Readymade Garment market. The article is mostly neutral when describing the workers' health issues that are a problem in Bangladesh. It touches on various issues such as processes of manufacturing that affect the worker. These issues are a little more micro and within Bangladesh such as crises happening inside of factories in Bangladesh. However the article does not really mention any organization that serves as a watch over workers conditions.

Despite some challenges Bangladesh is still able to maintain their place as the number 2 top exporter of garments in the world. In a study that uses the Balassa's RCA Index with data derived from the World Trade Data base, Bangladesh falls between Pakistan and India in comparative advantage in regards to access to the Textile Industry(). All countries, including Bangladesh, showed that their textile and clothing products are being threatened (). Despite the weak governance and competitive clientele of Bangladesh, Private actors maintain a positive outlook on the industry (). They rank Bangladesh as one of the top sourcing spots for the next 5 years (). Three factors have increased the competitiveness of the Bangladeshi garment industry: Labour Costs, Technological Development, and Market Access Policy ().
