Skeptiker Schweiz – Verein für kritisches Denken is a Swiss nonprofit skeptical organisation. It was founded in 2012, and is headquartered in Zürich.[1] The association is a member of the European Council of Skeptical Organisations (ECSO).[3]
Activities edit
The association (co-)organises lectures, film presentations, Skeptics in the Pub, public protests (such as a homeopathy overdose in October 2013), Camp Quest and skeptical conferences.[3]
Skeptiker Schweiz sometimes works with freethought organisations such as the Freethinkers Association of Switzerland (FAS) and the Giordano Bruno Foundation (gbs); for example, in 2012 they co-organised the Denkfest conference.[2] Unlike the FAS, however, it does not criticise the church, nor is it an explicitly atheist organisation. Skeptiker is mainly interested in discussing science.[3] It also cooperates with the Gesellschaft zur wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung von Parawissenschaften (GWUP).[2]
Skeptiker Schweiz is critical of the Swiss government's "irrational" and "arbitrary" policy of granting certain forms of alternative medicine a legal status equal to evidence-based medicine.[2]
The podcast skeptisCH discusses various topics through critical thinking spectacles.[4]
In 2013, self-proclaimed clairvoyant Pascal Voggenhuber threatened to sue Skeptiker Schweiz for calling him a "charlatan" on a podcast episode, but eventually he reconsidered.[3]
In 2017, Kovic tested the abilities of "mental magician" Pat Perry in Zürich. Kovic was impressed, and concluded that Perry uses clever tricks and has good knowledge about human behaviour. Perry admitted he cannot read individual people's minds, but he can influence them through suggestion, perception and conditioning.[5]
