Founders' Day is an official holiday marked on the 4th of August in Ghana to celebrate the contributions made by persons in the struggling for independence from the British colonial government. It was first celebrated on the 4th of August, 20219.[1][2][3]

On April 2019, the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act approved by President Nana Addo Akuffo-Addo[4] set 4th of August as a day to appreciate and recognize the effort of individuals that played key roles in the attainment of Ghana's independence. The day mark the formation of the Gold Coast Aborigines’ Rights Protection Society and United Gold Coast Convention. On 4th August, 1987, the Aborigines society was formed in the Gold Coast to resist the 1897 Crown Land Bill that seeks to put public lands to the benefit of the British Crown and the United Gold Coast Convention was also formed on the same day in 1947, it was the first political party form in the Gold Coast.[5] It replaced Founder's Day, a day that was celebrate on the birthday of Ghana's first president Kwame Nkrumah.
Opposition political party, namely National Democratic Congress and Convention People's Party oppoese the celebration of the holiday. [6][7]
