The American Cyanamid Superfund Site is a designated Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site located in Bound Brook, Somerset County, New Jersey. It is one of 111 current Superfund sites in New Jersey. Located in Superfund Region 2, the site is comprised of approximately 575 acres and is currently owned and operated by Pfizer. The formerly industrial property is located within an urban area that is comprised of commercial, residential and industrial districts.[1]

Business History edit

The Calco Company built the site and beganchemical manufacturing in 1915. The plant was used to manufacture intermediate chemicals and dyes. In 1924, The American Cyanamid Company purchased the site began its own operations. Over the course of 60 years, the plant became one of the largest in the United States, producing pharmaceutical, dyes and textile chemicals; organic pigments; rubber compounds and a range of intermediate chemicals. In total the company has produced over 800 chemicals.[2][1] American Cyanamid began producing pharmaceutical intermediates in the 1930s and continued until 1999.

In June of 1999, American Cyanamid ceased manufacturing at the plant. By late November of 2000, all buildings on-site had been demolished.[1]

The site is bounded by Central Railroad of New Jersey tracks to the North and Interstate 287 and Somerset Tire Service to the East. The Raritan River borders the site to South and West.[1]
