Kenneth Øvrid Holter, (born 12 February 1979), also known as Eth Eonel, Little Horse Deep or Fluxusboks, is a Norwegian singer, songwriter, producer and vocal coach. He is known for his eclectic output, that showcases a wide variety of styles, including synthpop, prog rock, ambient, fusion, jazz, noise and free improvisation. He has co-founded many bands, such as Önkel Renate, Magic Music, Aloysius, Trondheim Thereminorkester and A:V:K. From 2008 to 2009 he ran the highly experimental radio show Fluxusboks, based on fluxus ideas. From 2016 he released monthly album-length Fluxusboks shows. He runs a label called Eonel Sound.[1]

Early life

Kenneth Holter was born in Larkollen, Østfold, Norway, his parents Mette Irene (née Lauritzen, b. 1954) and Ivar Holter (b. 1951). They were both originally from neighbouring city Moss. Kenneth's father was a guitarist and had been playing in a few notable Moss bands in his youth. He let his sons, Kenneth and Christian, participate in musical activities at home. Together they formed the trio Tutti Frutti, and two cassettes were self-released and distributed in the community: "Kom og Sov" (1984) and "Oh Yeah!" (1987). The former contained Kenneth's very first composition "Lille Hest", that he wrote in 1983, four years old.

Kenneth's first musical education came through playing the euphonium in the school band, and later singing in a boy choir. At an early age he found musical theory to be "trite". He liked experimenting with sounds using the voice, tape techniques, organ playing and his brother's Commodore 64 machine. His first real compositions were made during a very productive period in 1989, recording his ideas onto cassette tapes.

As a teenager, Kenneth formed several bands, taking up different instruments in each of them, but always singing. "I had very specific ideas for all the bands I was in, and was the driving force, the initiator and the 'do-er'. During that time it was sort of lonely, and I often ended up doing most of the work myself", said Kenneth in 2016. The bands included the alternative/fusion band Önkel Renate (1991), where Kenneth provided drums as well as vocals; the short-lived nu-metal duo Black Stallions (1994) and the rock/blues/alternative band Magic Music, where Kenneth provided bass and keyboards. In the end of 1994, Kenneth's father Ivar bought a 4-track tape recorder, that Kenneth used for some of his recordings.

The rest of his teenage and young adult years, while still composing a lot of music, Kenneth's main priority was studies (Irish Gaelic language, history and archaeology).

Aloysius and Music Technology studies

Kenneth ended his Archaeology studies in 2002 and moved to Hamar. In the end of 2003, he was invited by a work colleague to sing in a band that had done various attempts at recording. Kenneth came up with the band name Aloysius and started using the artist name Eth Eonel. He bought home recording gear and a large Yamaha organ. From this period on a lot more of his ideas were recorded digitally and demoed, but he thirsted for more knowledge about recording and mixing before he would release anything. Delving into the avant-rock genre and reading about the ideas of conceptual composers like John Cage, Henry Cowell and Cornelius Cardew, Eth channelised his output into different genres, and one of his first digital recordings was an ambient drone piece made by time-stretching his "Lille Hest" composition from 1983, meant to be released under the moniker Little Horse Deep.

Eth first came to be known when his vocals were featured on the Monophobe single "Metermind", that gained significant rotation in July 2004 on NRK P3.[2][3] This collaboration motivated him to work further with recording music on his own, and he started working on the conceptual album "The Heffernan Effect", that would later be reworked and released as four seperate albums. Eth and Aloysius bassist Erik Eriksen created alternative metal in the spin-off duo 78-9 Exultation Wave Ensemble, releasing a single in 2005. That same year Eth also released the dance track "An Alice Less in Wonderland" under the moniker NSPRTN, that gained airplay on the Norwegian radio show mP3. Aloysius participated on a sampler CD and played Hamar Music Festival and were in a highly creative state when Eth moved to Trondheim in August 2006, to start his Music Technology master studies, leaving the band.

During his Music Technology studies in Trondheim, Eth's flirtation with the avant-garde currents in music became even more evident in his output. Emerging from the "Klubb Kanin" club concept in Trondheim, where he performed under the moniker of Little Horse Deep, he provided music for a sound installation at Storåsfestivalen in 2007.[4] The year before he took part in founding Trondheim Thereminorkester, Norway's only theremin orchestra. Historian Ola Nordal, writing in late 2006, dubbed Trondheim Thereminorkester's debut concert "legendary",[5] and during 2007 the ensemble became a prominent part of the Trondheim music scene.[6][7] In 2008, Eth Eonel played at the Støy På Landet festival, as Little Horse Deep.[8] From 2008 to 2009, he ran a highly experimental radio show on Radio Revolt in Trondheim, called Fluxusboks. He called it "anti-radio" and claimed it to be an attempt to make "an utterly unlistenable radio show". A total of 17 unique Fluxusboks shows were aired before Eth moved back to Moss in 2009.

Drawing Lines (1989) and Fluxusboks anniversary release

Eth Eonel's first solo album, Drawing Lines (1989) was released in 2011.[9] It marked the first in a series of albums comprising his compositions from 1989 to the present.[a] The album also made up the main part of a Master's degree assignment in Music Technology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, in which the main goal was to produce an album "with an 80's sound", but with the means of new technology. While the label simply presented the album as being "alternative pop",[10] as evidenced in his Master's degree report,[11] Eth Eonel draws a lot of influence from the 80's synthpop, with elements as well from progressive rock and avant-rock (odd time signatures, fusion of different genres). The album was mastered by the avant-rock musician and recording engineer Bob Drake.

Eth immediately started to work on the follow up, but hit a creative and motivational rock bottom, and there were no releases in 2012. In 2013 he tutored two teenage boys in music technology, and their iPad noise improvisations were recorded for later release. Together they were the trio A:V:K. On September 3, 2013, five years after the first Fluxusboks show aired, Eth released all the 17 shows plus one bonus show as Boks 2008-2013, packaged as a USB memory stick in a handmade wooden box, reminiscent of the fluxus boxes of the original fluxus movement. The whole of 2014 was spent writing and recording songs dealing with Eth's death anxiety, while in 2015 he wrote sonnets in the style of Shakespeare, all the while struggling with his knack for perfectionism, that led to a halt in his release plan.

Another Failure (1989), archival releases and monthly Fluxusboks

2016 saw Eth returning to release a diverse set of albums. His sophomore solo album Another Failure (1989) was released on April 1, and explored a bit more guitar oriented prog-pop. It has been labelled "weird, insistent, evocative, brave, catchy and theatrical". Starting in May he released monthly, album-length Fluxusboks shows with provocative titles. In July, he stood behind the release of Trondheim Thereminorkester's Fieldwork 2007-2008, a collection of live and archival recordings. December saw the release of the A:V:K 2013 recordings, titled Dub-Impro is the New Vanguard.

Trondheim Thereminorkester, or simply TTO, is a contemporary art music ensemble based in Trondheim, Norway. Formed in late 2006 by three music technology students and one musicology student, they became a prominent part of the Trondheim music scene during 2007 and 2008. The ensemble is currently on an indefinite hiatus. In 2016, their live recordings from 2007 and 2008 were collected and released.

Formation

Several music technology students at NTNU in Trondheim participated in a workshop in August 2006, building their own theremins. The workshop was concluded with an impromptu live performance. This performance was later dubbed "legendary" by assistant professor, historian Ola Nordal.[1] Shortly after, the three music technology students Ailo Kemi Gjerpe, Kenneth Holter and Thomas Andersen were joined by musicology student Lars Erik Brustad Melhus to form Trondheim Thereminorkester ("TTO"). They were instantly invited by Dr. Roland Wittje at the NTNU Museum of Natural History and Archaeology to open the exhibition Etterklang ("Reverberation") with a concert.[2][3][4]

After this first concert in March 2007, TTO were invited to perform at openings, award ceremonies, conferences and festivals, and performed live several times during 2007 and 2008. Their distinct style, an improvised contemporary art music with sounds made solely by theremins through effects units, earned them great prominence in the Trondheim music scene.[5][6]

Studio and hiatus

After their last performance in November 2008, the band wanted to make studio recordings for a possible release. They booked two full days in a studio in April 2009. By this time, Gjerpe had relocated from Trondheim, and was not available. The remaining trio recorded several hours worth of music, but after Holter also relocated to another part of the country, the group went into hiatus, and the recordings remained unused.

Andersen and Melhus remained in Trondheim and have worked together on several other projects (Lohn and Douglas Firs).[7][8] Being a Museum Educator at Ringve Music Museum, Melhus often talks about and plays the theremin.[9][10][11]

Release

In 2016, Holter decided to collect, master and release all available live recordings of TTO. "Fieldwork 2007-2008" was released digitally July 18, 2016 on Holter's own Eonel Sound label. The label's website also lists the previously unreleased studio recordings as a planned release, but legal matters concerning this have not been resolved.[12]
