Education and Early Career

Mark D. Griffiths graduating with a BSc in psychology from the University of Bradford. Professor Griffiths began teaching in 1987 while doing his PhD at Exeter University, he was as a lecturer for the Worker’s Education Association and did weekly support teaching at Exeter University. He completed his PhD on fruit machine addiction at the University of Exeter (1987-1990). [1] After acquiring the degree, in 1990 he secured his first full-time lectureship at the University of Plymouth where he also gained his teaching qualifications. In 1995 he moved to Nottingham Trent University, where he has worked ever since and is currently Professor of Gambling Studies. [2]

Since the start of his professional career as a psychology professor, Mark Griffiths has established an outstanding international reputation for himself in the area of gaming addictions and gambling and has won a number of awards awards for his achievements. The awards are listed in chronological order:

  • US National Council on Problem Gambling Research Award - 06/2009. Awarded by the US National Council on Problem Gambling
  • Lifetime Achievement Award For Contributions To The Field Of Youth Gambling - 05/2006. Awarded by the US Institute.
  • British Psychological Society Fellowship Award - 03/2006. Awarded by the British Psychological Society.
  • International Excellence Award (Canadian Responsible Gambling Council) - 09/2003. Awarded by the Responsible Gaming Council (Canada).
  • CELEJ Prize - 09/1998. Awarded by the Spanish Centre for Legal Studies on Gaming (El Centro de Estudios de Legislación Sobre el Juego)
  • John Rosecrance Gambling Research Prize - 06/1994. Awarded by The Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming.

Achievements

Aside from the number of important awards that Mark Griffiths has received, he also has a number of important achievements listed below:

  • To date Professor Griffiths has served on and / or chaired over 20 national and international committees some of them include the following: European Association for the Study of Gambling, Society for the Study of Gambling, Gamblers Anonymous General Services Board, National Council on Gambling, Gamcare.
  • Because of his extended research on the topic of gambling, he has been chosen as an adviser and served to many Government bodies including those in the UK, Australia, Canada, Israel, Finland, Sweden and Norway.
  • He has appeared on over 2,000 radio and television programmes since 1988.
  • He has been the keynote speaker at international gambling and gaming conferences in over 20 countries.
  • Editorial Board Member of the following : International Gambling Studies, Journal of Gambling Issues, International Journal of Casino and Business, International Journal of Cyber Behavior, Psychology and Learning, Aloma: Revista de Psicologia
