Janssen COVID-19 vaccine is a COVID-19 vaccine.[4] It is used in people over the age of 17 to prevent COVID-19.[4] It is given by injection into a muscle.[4] A second dose may be given 2 months after the first.[4] The initial trials found that it decreases the risk of COVID-19 after 2 weeks by 67% and severe disease by 77%.[4][1]

Most side effects are mild to moderate and resolve within a few days.[4] These may include injection site pain, headache, tiredness, muscle pain, and nausea.[4] Rare side effects may include blood clots, Guillain-Barré syndrome, low platelets, and anaphylaxis.[4] There is no evidence of harm with use in pregnancy.[24] It is a viral vector vaccine, meaning that it is made up of another virus (adenovirus) that has been modified to contain the gene for making the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.[4]

The vaccine received emergency use authorization (EUA) in the United States in February 2021 and was approved for medical use in Europe in March 2021.[24][4] It has been authorized for use at some level in at least 82 countries as of 2022.[25] It was developed by Janssen Vaccines in the Netherlands,[26] and its Belgian parent company Janssen Pharmaceuticals,[27] a subsidiary of American company Johnson & Johnson.[26] The US government paid about 10 USD per dose and provides them for free.[28][29] The vaccine is stored refrigerated rather than frozen.[24]
