This Youtube article dated 2022-10-08 is a documentary from Deutsche Welle (DW) about the improving sanitation world wide. Bill Gates is the presenter and supporter. It would be nice to have a transcript as this would enable listener to search the text for particular words, such as Narendra Modi the prime minister of India. Youtube itself does not appear to have such a search function.

The article has subtitles, but only two or three lines of subtitles are displayed at the same time.

New Scientist magazine has had several articles over the years regarding toilets. Youtube at time of writing the toilet battle film had 2,330 comments. These comments cannot be read top to bottom, and cannot be searched for. By comparison Wikipedia is a tidy and well structured treatise which can be scrolled and searched. The youtube comments are a “dog’s breakfast.” Do any of the competing toilet designs have these fly traps?

Converting youtube subtitles edit

Open Microsoft Word in one window and youtube in another window. This easier if the agent has two separate monitors operated from a single desktop computer. Start viewing youtubefrom the beginning of the film and type the corresponding Word text. Repeat until the end of the film is reached. Type the names of people, places and things mentioned in the film. Selected sections of the word file would then be cut and pasted into wikipedia.

Railways edit

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are big shareholders in US railways, albeit freight railroads. Long distance passenger railways have a toilet problem. Originally poop was simply dropped on the track; more recently holding tanks were provided which had to be emptied at regular intervals. Long distance airplanes also have issues with toilets.

Colocation edit

Streams containing sewage waste are typically used as rubbish dumps. There may well be good sense for co-locating colour-coded rubbish bins for containing different types of waste such as

  • green - kitchen waste and plants
  • blue - paper and cardboard
  • yellow - glass and recyclable plastic
  • red - other waste including non-recyclable plastic.
  • purple - hazardous such as syringes
  • white - batteries

The lids should be coloured, while the bin itself might be clear so that it can be seen that items are put into the correct bin.

Flies edit

Flies are a health hazard and are attracted to toilets because of the smell. The New Scientist magazine suggested a trap for these flies. A pipe acting as a chimney was fitted to the toilet which let in some light to attract these flies up to the end of this pipe where a gauze stopped prevented escape to the air outside so that they were trapped and killed. By contrast, the inside of a toilet is dark if the door is closed.
