This will be an attempt to come up with a list of "cities"/"towns" in England and their populations which will be somewhere between a list of conurbations and the current list of urban sub-units.
For each urban area, we will split the urban-subdivisions into local authority areas, and then sum these. The idea will be to produce something like the urban sub-units but undoing some of the more excessive splits that the ONS made. local authority boundaries will be used to avoid having to make judgement. We won't add on urban sub-units that are considered parts of differnt urban areas.
This may not end up producing anything useful, but we'll see. Let's first identify the units
- Barnsley, Cudworth, Darfield, Darton, Hoyland, Royston, Wombwell, Worsborgh
- Birmingham with Sutton Coldfield
- Chesterfield, with Staveley
- Doncaster, whole urban area
- Leicester, with Beaumont Leys
- Rotherham, with beighton, Rawmarsh
- Sheffield, with Aughton, Chapeltown, Mosbourgh/Highgate
