Richard Pfeffer, Ph.D., founded the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute at Florida State University[1] where he served as its Director for over two decades.

While a graduate student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pfeffer served as editor for a pivotal conference held by John von Neumann to advance the field of climate study, and the use of von Neumann computers for Climate Study.[2]

Research

Pfeffer's research interests include computer and laboratory modeling of weather and climate variability, hurricane dynamics and prediction, probabilistic quantitative preciptiation forecasting (PQPF), data assimilation, and studies of geostrophic turbulence.[3]

Teaching

Pfeffer is noted for his teaching style and challenging approach to homework assignments and tests. [4]
