Vince Shute was born in 1913 (1). He became a logger from a very young age, and was soon in charge of a large crew of men. Unsurprisingly, the men were plagued by black bears breaking into the cook shack, consuming and destroying their supplies. Like all people of that age, the loggers simply shot the offending bears. Vince said he lost count of how many bears were shot, but it must have been a number in the hundreds. One day, Vince decided to try a different tact; he began feeding the black bears in a field away from the loggers' cook shack, thus redirecting the bears' attention. His theory worked, and even after his retirement Vince continued to feed the bears. Unfortunately, this practice led to more and more bears showing up, which in turn attracted more and more people to come visit "The Bear Man" and his bears. Although Vince warned visitors that these bears were still wild and as such should command respect, there were numerous incidents of injury and damage to visitors and their possessions. Seeing the problem, Vince turned to some of his closest friends and said, "What is going to happen to my bears when I'm gone?" They put their heads together, and the American Bear Association was formed.
