The The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has this to say on the personality of Mikoshi: "His corny sense of humor has made him a friend to many, however keeps him from achieving jock-level popularity status. This personality also has the benifit of not wanting jock-level popularity". His quick puns and inferences take an intelligent mind to understand at times, and at other times take the mind of a three year-old to find comical. The best way to think all that comes from his mouth funny is to stay up till 3:00 in the morning and play Super Smash Bros. with Jigglypuffs.
Mikoshi does not have many hobbies, mainly because he is content as he is. In his free time, Mikoshi listens to a wide variety of music and plays card games on his computer. He also runs a forum and enjoys writing poetry.
In 2000, Michael became friends with a webmaster who enjoyed role-playing as a Yoshi. The webmaster, named David, invited Michael to join their role-playing forum. Michael, unsure of what to name himself, asked David where he came up with his username, Davoshi. David told him it was formed by forming a portmanteau from David and Yoshi. Using the same procedure, Michael invented Mikoshi (Mike + Yoshi). Although Michael never actually role-played, he used the name for two years.
In 2004, Michael, then under the username OnionFenix, was searching for a username that could double as a character name in stories he planned to write. He spent three months playing with different naming methods and names, but could not find a moniker he liked. Eventually, he remembered his old username and found it fit to use.
