Research

Ruth Kanfer is a psychologist known for her research in the role of motivation in a work setting. One of her past projects include on how certain goals may affect your resource distribution when learning and performing a task. Another one of her projects includes the role self-regulation plays in job search.

One of her research studies focused on age and reemployment success after a job loss. This focused on people who were 40 and over but were unemployed. Kanfer proposed that chronological age affects job search and reemployment outcomes after job loss. She used a meta-analysis and 2 supplemental datasets to come up with and examine 5 questions. Those questions were: 1) How strong is the relationship between age and reemployment speed? 2)Does age disadvantage individuals with respect to other reemployment outcomes? 3) Is the relationship between age and reemployment outcomes mediated by job search activities? 4) Are these relationships generalizable? 5) Are these relationships linear and curvilinear? The outcome of this research was that people over the age of 50 have a negative relationship between age and reemployment status and speed across job search. This can be applied to the rest of the world because it shows that over a certain age have difficulties finding jobs. This affects their lives and how they will live after that certain age.
